So, who drives what now?

Since this is a car forum and all...…

I've had my 2014 Lexus IS250 AWD for like 4 years now...had an issue with battery drain when (I got it used...bought someone else's problem) but fixed that via warranty with a change of the ECU.

Wished I paid the extra coin for the 350.

a 2017 Acura RDX for baby hauling. Fast enough....highway fuel economy isn't bad. The car looks great from the inside. \:D

Pretty happy with the RDX, it has rear seat warmers for the wife so she doesn't feel like a 2nd class citizen in the back.

Re: So, who drives what now?

Audi A7 Diesel as I drive a lot for work.
Toyota Venza limited edition for wife/kid and towing an enclosed trailer/projects, etc.

First mod always is tint for that incognito mode.

Very happy with both.

Re: So, who drives what now?

2007 911 GT3 - wish it had rear seats. My kid spends more time in it then my wife.

2016 X3 diesel - it’s ok for what it is I guess. Hate hate CUV’s. this will most likely be the first and last for me. Just hate everything about it performance wise. This is my work/family car.

2014 Volt - wife’s car, she’s still super happy with it, but I think for her next car she should get something fun to drive like a 718 :p. The Volt has over 80,000kms now and lifetime fuel consumption is 0.63L/100kms

My X3 was bought used couple years back and came with limo tints. Great for sunny days but I can’t see shit in residential streets lol

Re: So, who drives what now?

It's pretty good by my standards, not sure how it translates to diesel in general. Since most of my driving is highway i've done a few tests:

1. 90km/h-100km/h steady in the right lane I can get into the 5.x L/100km no issues. In the 100-115km/h range it's about 6.5L/100km.

Those are pretty low and hard to do speeds though, average highway driving (with flow of traffic) is 130-150 (407) and I average 7.5L/100.

Driving mostly city the worst i got was about 9L/100km.

Apparently can get even better with more power, but then I'd void the warranty so for now it will stay as is.

Re: So, who drives what now?

That’s decent for a 6 cylinder. About the same numbers I was getting with the 335d.

You seem pretty happy with it. I bet it’s nice and quiet on the highway.

2007 Santa Fe. It's done well as a family hauler and is holding up decently for its age. Will eventually trade it in for an MDX or similar sized 7 seater.

2015 Genesis Coupe Rspec. Fun to drive but had to bring it in for many warranty issues. Don't see it holding up well in the long term. Will replace with a decent sized sedan in the future.

do you even keep a car long enough to worry about it holding up?

what’s in the garage / driveway? see sig.

S - still have it. didn’t touch it at all in 2017. glad i revived it last year and did 1 track day with it. my boy loves cruising in it.

X3 - still going strong after 7 years (126k km now) — only broke down on me once (throttle position sensor fux0r’d — replaced gas pedal assembly. just did a major service before winter. hope it will last another 4-5 years — officially my winter beater

X1 - was a relatively last minute replacement for the 5 (cuz someone wasn’t selling their car at the time — see below) — became wife’s car - pretty zippy being a xdrive35; suspension is quite good even when pushing it a bit on ramps.

M - Hator was dumping it at the wrong time (after we got the X1) — couldn’t let it go to waste so this became my summer daily (what other car can i track and still haul 2 kids around?). love the sound and power though i have to say the novelty is wearing off. this thing is so dog ass heavy at the track and there isn’t much road feel to it. but can’t figure what i’d replace it with.

135 seems like a fun car for the $$$$. At one point, I was going to buy my buddy's 128 but it just wasn't the right timing.

Lack of garage space > me.

Installed the next size backward facing seat in the Lexus. There is like ZERO front leg space now. We'll probably try for #2 in a couple of years. The Lexus will have to go but will be hard to find anything FUN and also accommodate 2 back facing car seats.

Would have considered the new 286 hp GTI...but prob too small.

Maybe I'll get a SUV to do baby duties and get a Fiat Abarth and cram it behind the RDX on the driveway. Cheap enough and won't have to deal with parking issues.

Creaking noise front passenger side: Known issue on Genesis forums, hit and miss on warranty work from others but I got mine covered. They had to re-weld A pillar pinch welds.

Rattle on manual shifter. Shift lever bracket and bushing worn. Replaced shifter assembly brackets and pins. Warranty repair.

Clunking noise from driver front wheel area: They said left front stability link loose. They fixed/ replaced but still heard noise afterwards. Fixed under warranty. Now say it requires bearing ount and strut. Didn't have parts when I went in on Friday so need to come back for that to be fixed.

Rear right speaker was blown, replaced under warranty.

Few minor recall fixes.

Dealership and the service guy I've been dealing with have been great with my issues and it's great I have not spent a dime on repairs but sucks that a car with still less than 33,000km on it is having theses problems.

Mechanically it has been good so far.

My 11yr old Santa Fe with 160k on it has held up very well in comparison with just general wear and tear repairs.

Still DD'ing the 335d. At 170k, time to refresh the front end suspension, it's getting a bit worn out. Other then that, no issues since deleted.

I'm thinking maybe the M3 refresh kit from ECS and a B12 setup.. I guess we'll see.

Re: So, who drives what now?

'07 E90 328i - It has low mileage for it's year (140k) and has been good to me. It has enough power for my needs and I didn't want to get wrapped up in the 335 headaches. It has a bunch of packages that make it more than adequate and desirable for me. I used to daily it but don't drive it all that much anymore.

'12 Odyssey EX-L - Pretty much what you would expect. Its a been reliable, spacious and all around great family hauler.

Edit: The Odyssey is RIDICULOUS when it comes to gas mileage, not sure if others experience the same pain. It averages 15 L which is mostly based on city driving.

I had a few similar issues with my 2 Genesis Coupes. Nothing mechanical, just fit and finish and qc issues. Leather on seats coming apart, loose track, steering wheel leather peeling, a bad HID, wheel speed sensor. The pinch weld I think was traced back to an issue with robots that do the welding. My car was a bit older then his, so I guess I missed it.

The Gen Coupes were made in Korea unlike everything else Hyundai makes is built here in NA. Maybe the Korean plants were substandard. My Veloster and my Elantra were both rock solid and issue free.

Windchill doesn't affects inanimate objects.. So those -18 degree days with the windchill to -40 really doesn't mean shit.

Wow BMW never stops letting me down. Why is it that almost all of their motors have a major issue. The plastic timing guides let go on my 540, Rod bearing issues on both e46 and e9x M3s, HPFP issues with N54/N55? I haven't even followed to see what their newer models are plagued with but they should have at least kept an inline 6 in their line up without a turbo...Can't wait to see the new Supra guys bitch about "Toyota reliability' once the next gremlin is uncovered.

Super fun car, very quick. Its the same size as a civic but with 295hp w/"Quattro". Mine isn't modded, except for the resonator delete + tint. I drive in manual/paddle shift mode about 90% of the time, except for if i'm stuck in traffic or eating.

My audi year 2016 and came with 6 gears. I believe everything 2017+ have 7 gears.
I drive a lot back country, lots of HWY driving. At 130/140kms i'm revving at 3000rpm, it's brutal (for my year).

I have the adaptable ride shocks (whatever that option is called), so i can make the car stiffer or more cushy.

Very fun car, i absolutely love driving it, however it's time for something a bit bigger (eying S5 sportback or RS5 sportback).

My cars are leased as I own multiple business and i need the write off.

Let me know if you have questions?

You're absolutely right about the transmission. MY17 was when they started to introduce a 7th gear for most of their DSG equiped cars. I've been looking around to see what kind of mileage people are reporting back. Wife has a 17 Golf R with the 6 speed, while the MY18's got the extra gear. HUUUUUUGE difference - most seem to average about 11ish L/ 100 km with the 6 speed, while the 7 gear tranny seems to average around 8L/100km.

With that said, I think the DSG is what I love most about the S3... in sport mode while you're slowing down, the car is so quick to drop a gear and shoot the revs up to 4k. It's so.... encouraging LOL

That is why i drive it in manually mode 95% of the time. It's just another way of driving "manual".

Gear down, i tap once wait tap again, or i can double tap quick to jump 2 gears. With the resonator-delete, it sounds like what a "S-car" should sound like.

Re: So, who drives what now?

At $40k+ for a year-old S3, that's pushing right into Genesis G70 money. Car of the Year at multiple sites and magazines, available in RWD with a manual and LSD (and a real handbrake!) for under $50k. The Genesis will probably be in the low-30s used in a year or two, which could be a hell of a bargain (assuming anyone actually buys the manual).

I wonder what causes this? cold enough that the block mains freeze around the crank or somethin?

Re: So, who drives what now?

I have no idea. Though cold seize is a typical thing for something like a snowmobile - where the piston expands faster than the rest of the engine due to a combination of unlike materials or different thermodynamics and tight tolerances. Not sure if this is the problem for N55 - specifically because the TSB calls out the crankshaft.

01/23/19 03:23 PM
Re: So, who drives what now?

that's what i don't get, if it's the crank and it was contracting due to the cold then tolerances would get bigger no? and if anything would still spin maybe spin a bearing but not seize...unless the block contracts onto the crank and then you try to start it and it seizes that way. doesn't that engine have a aluminum crank or cast iron maybe?

regardless that's messed up. you'd imagine something like that would show up in their cold weather testing. however let's be realistic here, its not JUST bmw that's shitty, it's ALL cars and all manufacturing in general. dishwashers, washer/dryers etc last 5 years sometimes less and why are cars any different. gone are the days of 90's jap cars that will run in -50 or +40 degree weather with no oil and still not die.

wear/tear, moisture build up within the block (each car wears differently, oil/gas dilution differs depending on how often customer did it, etc.). then well...get some freezing cold days in and by chance had a bunch of moisture built up in there, freezes up...bazinga motor go boom. rare tho. i've seen just starters freeze up, and once a v6 older ridgeline motor went. but that was thru many winters in fort mac, alberta where it is -40c and less manyyy days of the year lol.

update on n55 from 1 engine tear down.
it was found that it was the rear most bearing that seized. The hypothesis is that the frigid cold didn't play well with the *revised* bmw spec oil for N55's, causing bearing failure and then crankshaft seizing.

Castrol no longer provides for bmw. i dont know what the revised spec is, but it obviously is terrible.

Did you get the 5 litre? I did, and I like it. I know it makes less power, but it's more simple, will be easier to fix

Mine is a 2014, so 360 hp/380 tq. Works for me. I'm glad I got the last year of the steel body because I have magnetic decals for work and I can just peel them off when I use it as a personal vehicle.

Almost 5 years later and nothing has changed.

Re: So, who drives what now?

It doesn't need more power but it's getting it to make it more reliable (colder charge air, better IC, less parasitic loss, built motor), and I'm taking my feeling of the built tranny and ordered new gearset and FD ratio to tailor it to my style and roads. Should come in around 2000 lb and 500whp.

Re: So, who drives what now?

that is such an epic setup, 500whp in 2000 lbs \:o

I'd imagine you probably can't utilize half of that power. I would've left it NA, but that's just me especially if the intent is to track it.

Speak of tracking, i am toying with the idea of building a clean EG hatch...anyone have any leads on something clean? I doubt it, but thought I'd ask, will likely have to bring something from the west coast.

Re: So, who drives what now?

It's got 325whp now and I use all of it, but it's a 1 pull wonder until charge temps recover. 245mm Re71rs allow for a lot of power to go down. It's stupid fun on so many levels. The new blower is a mercracing TVS1900 kit. NA doesn't suit the car, the S260 owners who have driven my car say mine feels more right in every way as intensity it turned to 15. I'll track it once in a while.

If you see an interesting car around Portland let me know.

Re: So, who drives what now?

Not yet but in the plans...

1) Wife to return the Volvo XC90, and pick up a Tesla Y ...
- Some things feel so cheap: leather seats are 'flat' (not perforated), don't think it has cooling, seat rails on the floor just look/feel like an afterthought, the 3 has perforated leather, and LED door trim
- I think the X would be better buy for size, but cost is pretty prohibitive ...
- Wife wants to wait for the refresh; wants the white leather

2) Trade in TLX for Tesla 3?
- Really don't want car payments ...

To be determined........

Two microwaves, must be a riot at parties.

1 EV makes sense, 2, hell no.

XC90 is nice so is the RDX, unless you really put on mileage going to a 3/Y is a downgrade.
