New Tech For Work

At work I'm asked what new laptop and phone I want. There doesn't seem to be a price limit, at least it wasn't implied. For example they asked if I want a Macbook or an iPhone X.

Personally I've never really been a MacOS user so I'm not as comfortable with it as Windows. They offered a 2in1 laptop and tablet (Surface?). Are they more for the novelty? How are the keyboards if you're spending all day typing on them?

Also for those with an iPhone X do you miss the home button? I'm wondering if I should stick to the 8 since I'd probably disable all the face recognition features.

tech management, but never dealing with any development stuff yeah?
PC has a limitation where you cannot have more than 10 nested folders. Which for some devs i know, is a deal breaker.

But since you're in ops, you can get by with pc!
Surface has been unreliable as hell (the surface pro4 - even the reviews on microsoft's own site are shite). The surfacebook is supposed to be good, but the alcantara keyboard is really silly and will look nasty in no time.

The new macbook pro's have super limited key travel, and that can bug some people. Also, it's a lot of money for some really old tech (though it is not your money!). If portability is a factor, u can't go wrong with the huawei matebook x. up to i7 power, fanless, smaller/lighter than mbp. close to no bezel and 2k screen. infact they have matebook x pro that has discrete graphics and 4k screen XD both have 4:3 aspect ratio screens (!).

the new dell xps 13 is also really crazy. 4k screen, better batt life. but 16:9 if that is your thing.

Not really but I will be mobile with the laptop (taking it home each night) so weight is a consideration.

I won't be doing any development but I may need to dual boot (Win/Linux)

I've never heard of this. Are you referring to the 260 character limit for filepaths?

I've been using Lenovos for the past 7 years and I've been content with them. Currently running an X1 Carbon. But if there's better out there and the company doesn't mind splurging, I don't mind ;\)

The Lenovo stuff is still good. I'm quite fond of their ultra-compacts if you don't need a ton of processing power.

Truth be told, I'm in the process of starting a new job. I haven't even officially signed yet, and my boss is asking me what laptop and phone I want. As he put it, he wants me to challenge the norm ie why stick what they've been using (I think Lenovo)? Just because its the status quo? If there is something better, we should be using it.

Actually he took it a step further, he wants me to attend a 2 day offsite Leadership meeting ... and I dont even work for them yet.

Anyone with an iPhone X? Love it? Hate it? I'm still rocking my 6. Its either I go to an 8 or an X.

As for the laptop, looks like I've got some homework to do.

iphone x has a weird aspect ratio, so the native apps work fine in that resolution, but anything 3rd party doesn't actually use the whole screen...so you have black bars at the top and bottom (games etc). If stuff like that matters to you, avoid. tbh i dont see it as a big step up from the 8

Have the lenovo yoga x1
. Form over function, weight and compact size is great but performance suffers. Much prefer t-series thinkpads

Not entire true. The crms I use via an app make full use of the screen. Perhaps that was when the X was first launched?

Re: New Tech For Work

If they are a Microsoft shop it will be a bit of pain for a novice on a Mac to connect to everything and integrate nicely.
I am not a pc or Mac novice and when I tired using a Mac on a full Microsoft environment it was not worth the headache
As for 2in1s, any we have given out get used as laptops %99 of the time. They would be at meetings with the little keyboard case folded out. I don’t think I have seen one being used as a tablet. If you need a laptop get a laptop
I use a fully loaded Dell xps15. It’s a badass laptop

Re: New Tech For Work

I have a surface book pro and the only time I use it in tablet form is when contracts need to be signed or I’m taking notes, which is handy AF. Otherwise yeah it’s a notebook 99% of the time.
