How do I crack this open? - Updated

My parents have an Acer tablet, that just like a billion other products charges via a micro-USB cable. This is not a separate cable but rather internally connected to the charger. Over time the cable snapped off. No problem, these cables are a dime a dozen, or so I thought.

It turns out, this uses some sort of proprietary micro-USB plug (see the rectangular opening in the dead center of the connector). In addition, even if you track down one of these USB cables the tablet requires a 12V 1.5A power source (average charger is 5V .5-1A).

Looking online they go for about $30 but apparently a couple have been ordered and none of them work.

So I'm thinking maybe I can bust this bad boy open and solder the wires back in. The only problem is, I have no idea how to open this thing without damaging it? No screws, no seams. Any pointers?

Try CanadaComputers... they have a whole line of aftermarket batteries and AC adapters...

Buy new tablet. Swap chargers. Return.

Not that I'm considering it (i'm not) but even then you'd have to know whether or not the cable is the same. I'm not sure if this is something that Acer did to all their tablets.

I'd buy a new one but (1) I dont think the tablet is worth that much anymore and (2) I can't guarantee the replacement will work.

My dad said he tried one location and they didn't have what he was looking for

Re: How do I crack this open?

Call Acer and ask for a replacement part. At least you're more likely to get something that works.

Not enough wire left to strip/solder/shrink tube?

Unfortunately not.

You don't see any seams at all? Otherwise it's pretty using a dremel to cut it open.

Get a 12v charger and cut it and solder the USB wire to that one?

Finally got around to giving this a shot and took this advise. Went to Sayal and picked up a 12v 2A plug (original is 12v 1.5A). The only problem is the original micro usb only has one white wire in it with some sheathing wrapped around it. Shouldn't there be a ground? I thought they had 4 wires.

Question, I'm guessing I should solder it to the new wire with the white line on it (indication of power?), but what about the other wire which I presume is the ground?
