Airlines to Asia

Any airlines I should consider looking at outside of Eva (Taiwan), Cathay (HongKong) and Korean (Korea) with direct flights from YYZ to Asia? I'm trying to avoid Air Canada if at all possible.

Don't blame you. AC is fucking brutal. Problem with united is no direct flight for most places right?

I'd rather have a GT3 stuck up my ass than do a connecting overseas flight through the US.

Yes no direct to asia. Have to go through the US. Thus why it's sub 1k.

Re: Airlines to Asia

where in Asia are you going to?

Eva would be good if you're going to Taiwan since they fly direct

if you're going to HK, CX is the obvious choice.

Korean/Asiana/JAL/ANA for Korea and Japan respectively

I can get to Japan with Pakistani Airlines for a little over $3k in business. It requires 3 stops and 62hours total.

I'm going to Japan. Since the direct option is AC and I hate them, I'm trying to find an alternative to getting there with a stopover of a couple days to explore another city. The three I listed in the original post are all options I'm considering, I've done Taipei and Hong Kong before so I could easily do either again however there's lots of appeal to visiting somewhere I haven't been before. Unfortunately the itinerary for Seoul with Korean isn't great (the return flight to Toronto leaves at 9:35am, which means I'd have to fly back to Korea the day before and do an overnight).

I'm not finding myself with much desire to visit any of the cities in China. Same goes for Manila (been there, done that).

Re: Airlines to Asia

Korean air service Is great.
Though Seoul is actually 40-50min away from the airport.
The new terminal at ICN opens next week. Chance to see a brand new airport since Korean Air would be using that terminal.

As much as i hate AC, I would just do direct on AC to Japan, its only a 11-12hr flight Vs if you wanted to stop over at HKG or TPE, or even korea. Just add more hours to your commute.

When you going to Japan? I'll be there beginning of Feb.

I went to Tokyo for 8 days in November. Just stayed there. Went to Hakonie for 1 night for the hot springs, should have stayed 2-3nights.

Have you ever been to Japan?
I have not till past November. It was legit. Everything about it. The food is amazing. Anthony Bourdain on an episode of Parts Unknown said he needed to hit up Lawson's everytime he goes to Japan to eat his Egg Salad Sandwich. Article to Egg Sandwich , So i did this as well. Frack, the sandwich was really good, and the huge chicken nuggets omg..

Eat a local restaurants, do not eat at "fusion'ish" trendy garbage, ate two meals of this in japan and it was horrible, was expensive and not good. Go to local restaurants, friggin amazing food and cheaper.

Be prepared to walk like you have never before, you think you walk a lot in HK? I avg about 10k steps in HK vs Japan, averaged 20k steps. I was wearing ultra boost then added my custom orthopedics, at about 18k steps each day (you can hit this within 3-5hrs) my feet would start to hurt.

Everyone is polite and orderly and no one speaks English. Bring Cash for local restaurants. Japan is weird its a very advanced city that have huge department stores that accept Bitcoin mixed with smaller traditional shops that only take cash to small traditional restaurants that you order from a machine before you enter (using cash) and once you are seated your food comes (chefs make it infront of you).

You line up for everything.

You can find made in japan products there, they are quite well made, but expensive.

Cramming in the subway is normal. Watch out for 'women's only subway carts'.

You will legit see drunk people sleeping on the street in a suit, one feet away their work bag. Won't be stolen in the morning.

Re: Airlines to Asia

See everyone hates AC.

I agree that AC isn't the greatest.

However, from traveling almost every 6 weeks, mainly on one airline (CX), i do venture on other airlines.

Here is my perspective, North American(NA) vs Asian airlines.

NA airlines, the cabin crew tend to be authoritative and don't really take shit from passengers. The atmosphere during the flight - to me- seems more orderly, meanwhile maintaining customer service.
Asian airlines, the culture of women/servers are not very well respected, tend to care more on customer service, the cabin crew are way to nice and polite, and they let passengers get their way. Inflight you can have unruly passengers. I've seen passengers give the crew hissy fits because they simply wanted a different seat,Or get caught trying to sneak in Prem-econ or business, wtf. Or i see arguments over dumb shit such as the food entries or even arguments about why they have to sit down due to the seatbelt light and turbulence. When a passenger who pays for econ doesn't get their way, they start a scene with the crew and the people around them.

TF, you don't get that with North American airlines.

However, if you sit in Premium econ or business, all airlines are the same.

Re: Airlines to Asia

unless you're front of the bus, i would just go with the shortest and most direct flight.

the asian vs. n american vs. european vs middle eastern airline argument is all moot when you're crammed in the back with 200 other plebs.

I just booked a trip to Europe with AC. Unfortunately its operated by AC Rouge, but the dates, times and non-stop made it appealing, oh and the 15% promo code didn't hurt when you're paying for 5 tickets.

Out of all the travel sites, I liked the new Google Flights the best as it gives you a grid/matrix where you can instantly compare prices with all the airlines for departure and return without having to execute a new search.
