What to look out for when buying ...

... a used cellphone? I've never bought a used cellphone from someone I didn't know. I'm looking for an iPhone 6 for the wife .

Do you call your provider and ask them to lookup the serial number? Do you register it on the spot in the presence of the seller? What prevents the seller from claiming it was stolen after he sells it to you?

Re: What to look out for when buying ...

She's been denied a hardware upgrade for a few years now by Rogers claiming that she would have to upgrade/increase her plan. In other words "we want to milk you out of more money each month if we're going to give you a deal on a new phone". I'm down for going into a contract but i dont want to increase our plan. And no chance I'm paying retail for a new phone.

What's everyone else doing? Buying phones outright? Hardware upgrades?

Mario,

I was looking for iPhone 6 for my wife on kijiji. Then I checked factory direct and got a refurb one from them. 1 year warranty. She had it so far for 6 months, no issues. and phone eas 9.5/10 in terms of condition.

Right now they have a sale, 399 for 64G iPhone 6. Just one thing, you cant return for refund, only store credit

Thanks I'll check them out. $400 was still more than I wanted to spend. You can typically find an iPhone 6 for $300-350

SO rogers won't upgrade her because they want to change that plan?
is that work plan from her work? if so, ask the rogers rep for that company to deal with it.

If not, buying a phone outright, sometimes isn't much more expensive than a hardware upgrade phone cost (speaking only apply here) anyway.

Re: What to look out for when buying ...

iPhone h/w upgrade through Rogers:

6/6s - $0
7 - $50
7 plus - $200
8 - $230
8 plus - $360

The caveat is she would have to go on a 2-year "Premium+ Tab plan", the cheapest at which is double what she's paying now for 2GB of data vs her existing 6GB

Exactly. Rogers/Bell/Telus are not going to give away a $800 iPhone if they can't recoup the money back from the 2 years monthly plan.

Most iPhone plan with 6GB data is at $90-100/month so if OP's wife not willing to change plan, I don't see how she can get around it. Just pay the $400 at Factory Direct and call it a day

I prefer to buy everything used but I won't buy a used phone. With built in batteries you will never enjoy that amazing battery life that phones have when they are new. Also half the used stuff out there is repaired phones with knockoff parts. No thanks.

Make sure it has the original screen if you buy used.
When I bought a used 5S, it had a ding in the corner. No big deal.
Turned out it had dropped, screen replaced, gyro wasn't working.

Friend's 6 screen replaced. Home button doesn't always work.
Cousin's 6 slighly bent (bend gate), I replaced screen for her after ordering from Amazon. Everything good for a couple of weeks, but it cracked again without her knowing. I guess the bent phone can't keep the glass straight.

On the topic of phones, i am on my second iphone5s...it's had a rough life and i may potentially replace it and thinking of going with 5SE.

My work phone is as big as the iphone 6, it's just more cumbersome to use with one hand compared to the 5.

My Ifone6+'s battery is on its last leg. I am looking at 2nd hand as well but ONLY Apple warranty replacements. Guarantee apple parts, minimal washroom time.

I use maybe 5 minutes a month so not concern with people's germs or putting my face on a screen where the prior owner's shit stained hands.

It's only $100 to get a new battery from Apple.

I can understand why people spend these amounts on a phone. Considering how much time they spend on it and what they use it for, its understandable. Considering how much people spend on other things, I think its justifiable. I just can't see myself dropping that kind of money on a phone. I'm sure it has a lot to do with never having paid for a phone cuz of work.

Re: What to look out for when buying ...

FWIW i didnt mind shelling out big bucks on a phone, as i do not have a personal computer. i'll just shoot my screen over to the tv if i want to browse on the big screen.

i don't really see the need for a personal computer any longer unless:
1) it is to fulfill hobby related things (gaming, video/photo editing)
2) professional related use

Other than that, a phone does what a computer can now. i actually think it's weird to spend 1k on a computer - which may not be used daily...compared to a phone which will - and a phone does more daily things than a computer can (ie: gps, health tracking, content consumption, integration with IOT etc)
