90 days unlock policy

Did you know?
Officially, you couldn't unlock your device from the provider until your contract was over,and now it has reduced to 90 days.
I tried to call Telus to unlock my 60 days old phone because I am traveling overseas next week. But they said it was the CRTC that implemented the 90 day policy, so they can't do anything.
Too bad no one is offering the unlocking service for iphones at a reasonable price anymore. I paid $7-8 to do my old iphone a half a year ago. Now it went up to $60-100+

How much is telus and rogers charging to unlock an iphone?

As I understand it, telecoms were doing this for free after 90 days since the new regulations. you only need to request it.
fwiw, i unlocked my iphone for free.
fwiw also, wife worked for telus at the time. lol

Unlocking by providers is $50 I believe.
and third parties are charging more than that.
Why would anyone pay them to do it?
I guess people in my situation

Is there a phone you can borrow?
What i do when i travel is have my iphone that's Canadian (turn off roaming, so i can still get calls)
and have a oversea's phone, which (don't matter what phone)

It's gonna be difficult to borrow an unlocked phone and I would like to use my iPhone 7 that has a decent camera.
It is such a BS.
I talked to a tech support last night for a different reason and he hinted me that it can be unlocked before the 90 day mark and suggested me to call back the billing dept.
so I called and now they say it's Apple that won't allow them to unlock.
Unconvinced, I kept drilling her then She sent an email to a different department who can look into it. Now I wait.

Where are you going?
There is another way to using your phone without getting it unlocked.
Most airports, sell a wifi "egg", it's basically data for up to 5 people. Small little modem/router thing. I know in Asia, almost all airports offer this service.
IT's a loan service, you rent it for like $3-5Cad/day, then you return it before you depart from the airport on your last day.

ya,I know they do.
Much cheaper to get the local sim and I don't have to carry that thing around.

Someone called me back and made an exception to unlock it.
She said it's the Telus's policy, so other field reps were BSing.
This tech guy was awesome. He even offered to help me if no one from Billing could.
