US address for buying something

What service have you guys used to ship stuff?

I need to purchase this medical chair for my dog and they don't ship to Canada due to Customs/duties.

So i'm thinking of shipping it to the Niagara Falls border?

Suggestions?

A buddy referred me to these guys

Re: US address for buying something

I've used them plenty of times. The only downside if that is that they're literally 5 mins from the border so to not raise any flags I stop in at Home Depot up the road and then grab a bite before heading back. All takes under 2hrs.

Soooooo, the downside is that they are way to close to the border? Meaning, i just can't go pick it up and then cross back to the Canada side? .... IS welden Galleria close? Basically i need to walk around for a few hours? I dont know i probably will have to declare it.

I personally don't risk it just because I've had my car searched twice. I don't know the reasons why, I don't ask questions I just try my best not to stand out.

You probably could grab the package and return right away

Raise what flag?
It is not illegal to do that.

You go pick up your item at that place means you are bringing something purchased from the States.

You go to Homedepot to buy something, it means you are bringing something purchased from the States.

Yeah, this is the stupidest thing I've ever heard, you're way too paranoid. There are plenty of these mailbox places in Detroit and I use them all the time. Whenever I head home, Canada customs asks me how long i've been away, I tell them 10 minutes, they ask if I bought or received anything, hand them receipts and either wave me through or send me in to pay tax.

Re: US address for buying something

cbiusa but with the USD so strong nowadays, it doesn't make sense for most products unless it's only available in the states

factor in gas, time, etc... you might as well have crossborderpickup.ca import it for you (service fee [which you pay anyways using a US box], duty [which you unlikely pay when you cross yourself], and HST [which you usually pay when you cross because if you make the effort to do a US shopping run, it probably means you are bringing back a good amount]).

+1 for cross border pickup.

http://crossborderpickups.ca

They give you their USA address. Item ships there. Then they will clear customs for you and you pick it up in Mississauga. Used them twice. Well worth the money and you save yourself time and effort crossing the border.

How does going to home depot reduce the chance of getting dinged on taxes at the border?

If you are doing cross border pick up you have to pay taxes unless you were in the country for more than 24 hours, the only things that can reduce your chances of paying taxes:

1. You lie that you have nothing to declare (musings of a moron)
2. The mood of the CBSA agent who ultimately decides if they are sending you in to pay hst or not.

i use kinek by rainbow bridge to ship any us good to.

when i pick up, i either stash it with other goods (ie, bought something at home depot) ive bought and not claim it, or just claim it if thats the only thing i picked up.

the more you buy the more tx you pay. so to not pay as much tax you dont claim your shipment but claim a lesser item you purchased. my shipments never come with a receipt, only packing slip, so no values to show.

i think thats what he means. hide pickup, claim less, pay less.

Wanted to mention to be careful with crossborderpickup.ca as you need to factor in duty because they follow the book when importing your goods whereas if you drive it over, the CBSA officer usually just wants you to pay HST.

I made the mistake of importing a Lovesac sectional using crossborderpickup, and the sofa cost more than Restoration Hardware after factoring in service charge, duties, taxes, delivery.

you have to be smart about it. cant hide clothes and shoes with screw and duct tape.

for example, if i buy nike shoes and ship to my po box. i am grabbing something at nike outlet like a tshirt or joggers. same brand, same bag. no question when presenting nike receipt.

RH was 20% flat for delivery, duties, HST, but you pay USD, which is no different than buying from Lovesac, an American only company. I think RH now offers better terms for Canadian shoppers.

been there, done it.

We are mixing up two things:

1. Going cross border shopping and not declaring everything (YOLO)

2. Claiming that going to a PO box direct and returning to the border raises red flags, where as staying across the border for 2+ hours is any less of a red flag.

This isn't difficult.

You can order a ton of shit to a PO box and mix it all up and come back, declare most, and pass, it's not any less risky than getting po box stuff then going to outlets and adding even more shit mixing it up and not declaring everything. In both situations if searched, you are fucked. Neither activity prompts CBSA to exercise less scrutiny over the other. Therefore going to home depot or outlets to raise less red flags is not correct.

Gem responses for sure.

They won't ship to canada as shipping is $125 + whatever duties and customs, so they advised me to ship it to a US address, $20usd.

I don't mind paying HST on this or duties or customs, it's the time i have to spend for this that gets me. I"m thinking i'll just go with the G-unit for the day and shop/eat at Galleria or something.

I checked out crossbordershipping.com (or whatever that suggestion was in this thread), it looks good.

How long do you think it takes to get from St.Catharines to the Lewiston bridge?

driving an hour to get gas, to save gas seems whack.
I mean, if one is driving because they enjoy it, and the drive to the border happens to be a fantastic driving road, then ok, i totally get it. but i also know this isn't the case. How much is one saving to spend 1 hour on getting gas + the hassle of going across security? plus there's the cad to usd conversion. pls tell me the story about how the guy drives 1 hour to this great forex place to save on the exchange also

Podunk border crossings probably don't have tolls, or lineups.

Even from St. Cath it's gotta be 20 minutes to the nearest gas pump on the US side, and $4.50 CAD to cross at Lewiston. I just don't see it happening unless hundreds of litres of gas at one time lol kaboom.

Did he buy anything from US and bring it back to Canada?
If he just drives over to fill up the gas tank, there's really nothing to declare.

He usually fills the tank and a few jerry cans. Prices are way cheaper on the indian reservations. His entire trip is probably just over an hour.

ya toll fee + gas used to go there and back + 30% US$ difference + at least 1 hr of your time.

Today's average fuel price in Buffalo is $2.46 per gallon.
That is $0.65 per liter
Which is $0.87 CDN per liter

Costco gas price is 102.9 today.
If he gets 100L of gas, he saves $16CDN
Compare to other gas stations 109.9, he saves $23CDN

Toll is $8CDN total right?
Let's say 1hr of driving/idling, he used $10 worth of gas.
So, either he saves $5 or loses $2 if chosen over Costco.

Re: US address for buying something

In conclusion, in the best case, he saves $2 and in the worst case he is out of pocket $5 XD XD XD XD XD XD XD XD

I can see this being more common when the dollar was on parity...maybe.
still wouldnt do it doe. may as well take the transit and scour RFD for door crashers while using stacked coupons my entire life.

Even when you factor in paying the toll on both sides?

I should have elaborated, I gas up whenever I am there. I'd never go over just to get gas, if I did that I would have to go to subway and home depot to not raise any flags.

Used CrossBorderPickups, and the parcel was delivered by UPS on Friday 9:30am to their Niagara Falls depot... (confirmed via UPS tracking, and CBP's internal 'check tracking number' page.)

Not exactly sure what's up, but supposedly the package should be made available in the system within 24 hours, to click, and tell them what to do with it... \:\|

Still waiting... (It's Monday 9:30am as I write this...)

They aren't adding packages on a Saturday, that place is rammed from open to close with people picking shit up. I am willing to bet you'll get an email about it being available today.. If not tomorrow. Patience, lol.

Update on CrossBorderPickups.ca ...

- As patience would have been a virtue, I got an automated email at 1:30pm Monday... Punched in the estimated value...
- Duties: $0, taxes, $45CAD
- Shipment fee: $21

The workflow is confusing ... it said it'll ship it to the address on file...

i.e. I wasn't able to really figure out how to say "I'll pick it up in your Mississauga location", etc...

And after PayPal payment ... no clue wtf just happened. Hope and pray, again?

I just meant in general, it really depends on what you are getting... like you can always say, i picked it up used off facebook, and make up some fake e mail saying how much you bought whatever item for to really cut down on taxes.

Re: US address for buying something

yea, they are getting smarter, so it all depends on what you are getting.

I find that most things under $100 they usually let you go.

its a bit harder to get away if you have a trunk load of stuff, so I usually do something low, but still somewhat reasonable.

Anyone that's used CrossBorderPickups.ca ...

Were you able to select courier? i.e. UPS vs Canada Post vs Purolator, etc.

My package finally shows shipped after 1-2 days, using UPS.

You mean from Crossborderpickups to your Canadian address? I'd assume you could pick whatever courier you wanted, I always just go to their depot and get my stuff.

Re: US address for buying something

This whole experience so far is terrible. There are so many gaps in the whole process that I'm freaked the fuck out where my package is...

Latest update is I got an email saying it's shipped via UPS, which, I didn't get a choice to choose courier. That was Wednesday 11:30am, with a UPS tracking number.

As of now, UPS says they have zero tracking details other than a shipping label was CREATED.. FML ...

It's a fragile gift too \:\| \:\(

No fucking shit...

I've been on the phone with the CBP lady 5 times since I've lost shipment... It finally arrived today, all in one piece. They ended up refunding me the $15 'processing' fee, as a gesture...

I'm not even sure if I would EVER use them again ... That being said, they now have a brand new pick-up centre in Markham (Warden / 407) \:\|
