Came home to 27 inside with 45% relative humidity. Not sweating inside, A/C stays off for now I guess |
I Burke down yesterday and turned it on. Can't stand sleeping when it's hot. |
Closed the downstairs air returns and opened all the ones upstairs, currently running with just the fan on. It's not too bad now that the sun has come down. |
nope. been waiting all winter for this shit. was nice sleeping in just my boxers and no covers last night |
Caved lastnight lol first day of real warmth |
Not yet, I do miss having a ceiling fan in the bedroom though. |
not a baller enough to afford the world's most expensive hydro to run the AC. |
AC has been on since Tuesday... That is what it is for. Not worth the bad sleep in the heat |
Caved in and turned on AC on Sunday lol /weak |
i held off till yesterday. could've gone longer and usually i'm the first to complain about the heat in the house, but wife was having a tough time sleeping. not worth the pennies saved. |
House stays 22C all year long. AC on since last weekend |
BALLERS I think my house stays cooler than most because of trees around. We did splurge last night and turned on the ceiling fan Told her not to get used to it |
i'm surprised you don't just hand her a giant palm leaf and a bowl of grapes and tell her to get to work. |

Originally Posted By: Risky Business BALLERS I think my house stays cooler than most because of trees around. We get undisturbed afternoon sun until sunset beating down on our living room and dining room. Also upstairs master bedroom. We caved yesterday as it gets unbearable. My parents in Mississauga (nice treed lot) can get by with windows open. |
have to, esp with lil guy. my place is small and faces south with good window sizes, shit heats up quick. |
nope. no ac until its 29 C in the house lol. open a window, turn on a fan, eat an ice cube. this shit aint hot yet. |
tree coverage works well. No trees here. Bedroom faces southwest and gets hammered all day/until sunset. Rarely a decent breeze through the windows. We are way more conscious than our neighbours, but shit just gets unbearable when trying to sleep(even with a fan). I run about mach 10 degrees doe. //fall is the bomb for open window sleeping. |
No AC yet -- just opened all the upstairs window when I came home -- the breeze from the outside is good enough. We keep the blinds closed during the day so it's not as bad. |
Even blinds closed isn't helping enough. Big windows are great for light... but not for summer heat lol |
This morning was the first time my house was over 72. I told myself if it was 73, I was turning it on this morning. I thought it's super early, wasn't it snowing a week ago?! but I never give a shit about that. If its like 1 degree hotter or colder than it should be, turn that shit on. Fucking hobos. |
I saw 80 yesterday in the house. Woke up to 68 this morning. Big maple in the back yard really helps with the sun in the afternoon. Going to install a ceiling fan in the master (Replaced the old fan with a light, need to run some new wire) |
When I saw 27 I was surprised how comfortable it was inside. All about that humidity. If it was 25 and 60% humidity no chance of ac staying off. |
waiting for the condo to switch over to cool so i can keep my condo at a cool balmy 16* |
Turned mine on this morning. Sleeping last night wasn't as comfortable as usual. |
Turned it on. I melt when it's above 20degrees. |
I'm loving the heat, but had to turn on the A/C because the dog started panting...House was 23C/24C I find it depends on the year of the house. My dad's house is older 1980's build is always hot and has tree's blocking the sun the entire West side of the house, think 29C/30C. Mom's house mid 1990's build stays relatively cool without ac on, 26C/27C & my house 2010 build 24C/25C. Dad's house is unbearable at anytime of the day without ac on. Outside is usually cooler. |

I'm thinking of doing two things to help this year with the heat on the second floor. The first one is easy enough which is to not only close the vents in the basement but to block them somehow. I know they have internal flaps but I'm thinking to stuff some towels or something in there to really block them off. The second thing I've been contemplating for a long time and just never bit the bullet and thats to add more insulation to my attic. I currently have the blown in type. Anyone DIY? |

I don't remember if your basement was finished, but don't block the vents. I finished my basement this past year. I've kept my vents closed ever since. I'd leave the return registers open but close off the forced air vents. Further to my point above I was planning on blocking them off. |

Blocked vents over the winter are fine, in the summer it's a completely different ball game. Also the "savings" are hardly quantifiable. |

Mine went on Monday. Just took hard to sleep in the heat. I'll stop doing other things to cover the added cost of running the ac |

With the tank I'd run a dehumidifier |

I tried they don't work worth a shit. |

Ran two at old place. Worked well. I'm guessing it's operator error. |

they didn't pull enough moisture out of the air, and they suck up alot of juice looking for a solution that i don't need to leave plugged in and running all the time. |

Shouldn't running the a/c negate having to use a dehumidifier? |
Yea you are screwed man, you will need to run them or the place will mold, if it hasn't already. First thing I would do is buy a humidity meter for 5 bucks from home depot so you can at least quantify where you are at. I know a lot of people like to throw around advice without numbers...so start there so you can at least make an informed decision. |

Probably because there is no air return in the basement |
I was going to say that, there usually are, but most of the returns are on the living floors since basements technically aren't considered as "living" spaces. My place has air returns in the basement, large ones too and I still have to run a dehumidifier. |
as a condo dweller, i'm ignorant to this... how much does it cost to fire up the AC at a house to the point that you guys have to readjust your budget, or suffer til it's 30*+ (unless that's just personal preference) before turning it on |

ah perhaps that can be why. i have no return in the basement. there's a little vent on the side of the patio (cold room is underneath it) and i noticed that overtime it's been corroded shut. i'll start by replacing that and grab a humidity meter. |
I put a 75qt dehumidifier in the basement. I've been draining it every single morning when outside wasn't even humid, and only set it to 45%. Today air comes on. 40 degrees with humidity they say |
Turned the AC on after hockey lastnight, couldn't stand it upstairs any longer. |
my basement is an icebox - wife hates, i like. |
Getting this place in the winter, I don't even know if the bloody AC even works. Need to swap out the ancient thermostat and cross fingers that I don't need a new AC. |
still no a/c, it has been 25 inside, humidity crept up to 55 tho. |
So what t-stat are you guys running? Ive been eying the new ecobee t-stat |
I was eyeballing all the fancy thermostats but ended up with a simple Honeywell programmable one. The others sound cool with the features but at the end of the day it will be a one zone unit that will make the rest of the house too hot or too cold depending on what floor you have the remote receivers on, no different than a basic central unit. For me, I set my thermostat (when on) to 23C whether it is heat or AC so the rest of the fancy stuff goes unused. |
Pull your t stat from the wall and check how many wires you have on the existing wire...if it's an older home you might need to run a new wire (that's what I had to do in order to run the new fancy t stats). Was disappointed to find out after the fact. |
Same here. Found out whoever installed it originally had 5 wire out from the furnace but then converted to 4 wire up inside the basement ceiling? Fucking dick |

27 inside and 70% humidity I think this is the pivotal moment. Will try to delay. Life is better with voluntary discomfort. |

Just take a cold shower |
Might be ok came down to 65% I am sweating doe |
I swapped the tstat and turned on the ac. Wife was complaining about the heat as she came in the house. Wasn't all that bad during the day though, showed 24.5c with just the furnace fans running. |
35% here. So nice and dry. AC is set to 28 when we're not home lol. Never even comes close to that but I want my green leafs (nest) |
Nope. Holding out, but going to be tough with a wife and baby. AC is original to the house, sounds like a bat out of hell when running and hardly cools so this is the year to replace it but trying to hold off I'm doing it for the environment y0 :p |
for those trying to hold out why don't you get as much air re circulation going as possible? We sick a box fan in the window upstairs and open the main floor windows. The house changes temp as fast as the outdoor temps drop at night so by the time we go to bed its very nice. |

I have temp/humidity meters all over this joint, that's how i balanced my ducts. /triggered |

My 3rd floor temps aren't much different from the 2nd floor since my family room is open to the 3rd floor (17 foot ceiling foo). We did put up blackout curtains in my daughters room to control the heat otherwise it does get stuffy (room faces south) |
Despite best efforts thermostats are not the same. Nor location or home design. So we compare basic temp figures it's not exactly apples to apples. Biggest differences are location and home design |

Did some tests in the house today: Basement 21c 50% humid Main 24c 47% Top 24c 50% Guess I did a good job on insulating the basement. I've never had to run a dehumidifier down there as it's never been an issue. |
Love good quality data. I have about same difference between basement and first floor temp wise. Humidity is much higher for me though. |
I really wish the Nest (gen2) had remote sensors |
Main floor is 25 at 50% humidity and basement is at 20 and 70% :|. I think humidity distribution is different between two story and bungalow. It's also fully insulated, but it is raised. No ac on just standard temp as of now |
Why is your humidity so damned high in the basement? You have a grow op down there? |
Really depends on the style of insulation too. I used the building science method with foam boards and formed a complete vapor barrier on the exterior wall vs using a vapor barrier on the inside |
I think it's most because my basement is s fully seperste unit and closed off to main floor, so the two levels don't mix at all. That's the only thing I can think of and also it's not that mine is humid it's more that loudsubz is less humid than average |
Loudsubz are your windows open? My basement windows are open that could also be the biggest reason |
My garage which is also in the basement is at 50 % humidity |
Never open the basement Windows unless I fart and need to air out |
