Key fob on my Mini is the rechargable type. I have two keys, one is new and never been used but the battery is dead. Dealer says batts can't be changed and to buy a new key; ok fine. BUT i still want to try and change it. Anyone done so? I know I can buy the rechargable type of battery just wondering if anyone here has done this before. Obviously it was a stupid design cuz they abandoned it. |

can't you put it into the slot to charge? Only cars with comfort access have the non rechargeable serviceable batteries. That said, I have seen people open them and change them |

But the old E Series platform cars have non rechargable batteries on cars with comfort access (same as mini). The newer F series fixed that |

If you have CA, you DO NOT have a rechargeable battery in the fob. comfort access is the proximity key with memory seats and shit right? i'm pretty sure my manual said pop the key into the slot and drive to recharge the battery. it even shows that on the dash display, but NOT iDrive. |

Do you need to use the FOB to lock/unlock the doors? Do you need the fob in the slot to start the car? |

That said, I have seen people open them and change them It looks as if this particular key was never used so I believe the battery is dead to the point where it won't hold a charge or re-charge any longer. I've done a 1hr drive with it and still didn't work after that. I don't really have anywhere far enough to go to charge it for longer than that. The manual says to use both keys and to not let one sit longer than 6 months unused. I'd rather try and change the battery as i have nothing to lose at this point. |
