hello friends. got laid off last month, been having the best time of my life since i wasn't happy and reluctantly stuck around because of that golden handcuff. i got a decent severance and figured i shouldn't bother with EI since i didn't want to put a strain on the system, but everyone is telling me that's stupid and don't be a fucking martyr. i've been contributing to since forever and it's actually a very well funded program. i was let go on March 24. I'm on payroll til May 19. a shit ton of severance will come to me in May. i applied for EI on monday. when will my government cheddar come in??? after enjoying the month off, i'll go talk to the outplacement people next week. was gonna do it this week but went for day beers instead lol. if anyone got any tips for (f)unemployment, i'm all ears. and if you know of any openings, i'm also all ears. EI begins after : all the money they pay you 'runs out' (i.e. sevarance) + 2 weeks 'deductible'. From that point on you'll have to log in and submit time sheets every 2 weeks. Chew on those benefits cheddar. Clean teeth, rub 'n tug massages, orthotics, speech therapy, psychiatry, acupuncture. wut. Sucks dude... I knew shit was going to hit the fan when all the work dried up from your firm.... |

Sorry to hear snaps You will bounce back before you know it, unfortunately those of us who'd line up for sucky sucky will be out of luck As far as EI, I don't think you are eligible to receive any until your severance has run out (pro rated at your latest annual salary). If you want pm me the details of the package, there might be room to threaten legal action to get more (we settle those out of court almost weekly ) I will keep an eye out for any suitable postings. |

for my severance, i got stat in lieu til may, and then about the same amount due in may for stat severance, and if i sign a release to not sue, another chuck of severance will come through. i was told to lawyer up and try to squeeze more, and generally, anyone who lawyers up will get more, but i won't bother since lawyers cost money and i rather leave this bridge unburnt. this layoff is due to economic enviroment, would rather have the door stay somewhat open when $200 oil returns hahah thanks tho RB! you the real MVP. |

Get on asap. Takes a while to kick in. I missed the first month when I was on it. And yah don't be stupid. Apply for that shit. Better you than some fuckin useless human being milking the system |

I heard second-hand that they have feeds into the Canadian passport system, so if you fill out the timesheets and lie that you were in town and available to work, but were actually on a beach somewhere ... You will be caught. What will they do? I'm unsure. They girl that got caught wasn't exactly willing to divulge much after telling that story... You can go anywhere/do anything that doesn't involve a passport though... |

how about nexus?? if i go away, it'll be to NYC for a week or so. the big trip will be once i land a FT gig |

From a resume perspective ... I'd remove/change the 'Coordination' piece... That sounds like you were a lowly project rat, doing coffee runs and generating reports. A premium word would be Program Mgmt (if you did do that) ... Details on budgeting, forecasting, would be ideal. As would any processes you might have picked up @ your job... ITIL, agile, scrum, ISO, etc... Originally Posted By: c_snapper Ryerson B.Comm in IT Mgmt. 8 years experience in Project Management & Coordination. You can go and do anything the FUCK you want DURING the time you're chewing your company cheddar. The above only applies when you're chewing GOV cheddar. And, in the wk that you go down to NYC while you're on EI, just fill out the timesheet honestly; they just won't pay you the few dollars during that time you've been away. summary: EI pays you when you are eligible, and ready, AVAILABLE, and willing to work. Sorry to hear but enjoy the time and you'll be back in a FT role in no time with your experience and personality. |

Find a job at my bank and I'll split the referral bonus with you. It'll buy a few oz of the good stuff. |

Rather than saying "sorry to hear" - I am going to say "congrats!" It's not everyday you get paid to leave a job you hate / no longer like (which you'd quit on if you found the next best thing anyway). At least now it you're on paid vacation. Sounds like you've been there for a while. Not that I'd recommend where I work as a place to work, toss me your résumé and I can forward it to the PMO - as they are always changing PMs like people change their undies. |
That sucks, but at the same time enjoy your free time before you head back to work FT. If you see any postings at my workplace, PM me I'll reach out to HR for you. |

Your experience, plus type of job can open up opportunities in contracting ... It just might work out in your favour. I don't see you needing the medical 'n dental benefits at your age, and being single, unless you're on expensive (prescribed) drugs... |

sorry to hear snapper. you should ask my ex-wife, she's expert level with scamming EI. back when my mom got laid off after 21yrs of work, she got a fat severance, EI said the same thing, burn through that first then you get EI. but if you want, you can put most or all in RRSP and then your EI will start now. |
thanks for all the kind words gents, but most importantly, it's what hyper said, i'm enjoying some paid vacation. thank god the weather been nice the past couple weeks and thanks for all the offer to help! but let's talk about what's important....when are we going drankin' again? |

8 years and that's all you got?.. but yea.. like everyone else says, get your EI going, submit the paperwork asap so there's no gap/delay. and yes, you must be in canada while being paid by EI.. as you must be able and ready to work any day. |

EI is such a fucking joke. You pay into it all these years, and when you need it, there are all these conditions that if you don't meet, the money you paid in is for nothing. Also, it takes in way more than it pays out, and the gov't just balances the budget with the surplus. Also, whats with the max insurable earnings being 49k or so? Who makes that in Toronto. I'll pay the premium to insure my full earnings, so that if I ever need it, I get my full salary. |

Snapper, my mom was let go last year. Was a dream come true for her since it meant early retirement lol. She had to wait for her severance to run out before getting EI. Milk that shit as long/much as you can, it's a joke how much you will get, but hey it's better than nothing (if memory serves me right EI maxed out is around $900 every 2 weeks or so?!?!) Confirmed on not leaving the country on the gov's dime. Best of luck, if times get rough we are always looking for a buggy boy lol |
