What are you guys running?
Had a package stolen from the front door Amazon is awesome though, full refund.
Figured a 2 or 4 camera system would be good
I want to be able to view the feed remotley, i would perfer a notification when there is motion, other than that i dunno anything else?
Any suggestions?

Re: Home video Security System

I've been eyeballing some 'higher-tech' ones, i.e. DIY, wireless, cordless sensors, etc...

Nothing that really has the ease/dummy-like numeric keypad panels + keyfobs though...i.e. I don't want a huge ass keyfob to disarm all the time. A tiny one is awesome PLUS keypad.

Is what I am currently using right now at home.

Excellent technical support, and APP integration exceptionally with iOS which I am able to replay video feeds via my iPhone or iPad.

2TB 8 Camera setup around the house and in the garage.

I cant remember exactly how much I sent on the setup

I think it was around the 1300ish or so

2TB DVR with 24" Touch Screen monitor (IMO useless since you can view everything remotely
8 wired cameras on top of that additional wiring going to the back yard

But it looks like prices went down

Re: Home video Security System

You get what you pay for.

The Lorex and q see stuff is low end. It wows you with its large hdd and included cameras but things fail on these units and sometimes tech support can be iffy. We have installed a couple q see units for customers only to have to replace cameras a few months after. ip cameras have come down in price a lot so your other option is a few ip cameras and use a PC with blue iris to record. Other than that I suggest you buy a knock off Hikvision Dvr and a couple of cameras. You can get 650tvl analog cameras around $30-50

You can also use cat5 for analog with a Balun. Rg59 and power is hardly used anymore because of copper prices.

Re: Home video Security System

Another option is just buy an ip camera and put a micro as card and record on motion. You could also have the images emailed or uploaded to an ftp and no Need for another machine recording

Re: Home video Security System

Was eyeing a Lorex LHD818 system at Costco the other evening. 8 channel 1TB DVR with 8 720P cameras for $499. Did some preliminary research, not bad for the price, but I'm somewhat deterred by the long term reliability of it. I was planning on doing my own DIY system, but these packages and their pricing is starting to get more attractive. This system runs coax though.

Re: Home video Security System

Like I said you don't need to run coax you can still run cat5 and buy baluns for it. If you decide to switch down the road to ip you still have the correct wiring for it.

Not just thieves but anything where you need proof down the road. Who says it wasn't one of the neighbors thieving stuff? Plus dummy cameras are so fake looking anyone who sees them can almost tell they are fake. If you spend more on a good looking fake you may as well just buy the real thing.

You don't even need those ones.

A balun runs on 1 pair, so you have 3 pair on the cat5 to do what you want.

You can buy the $5 a pair baluns and wire the other spares for power.

Re: Home video Security System

between me and loudsubz we could prob get you a reputable brand system.
if you want one of us to run the cables holler.

only question is what do you want to see? focal length on kits are like 3.6mm, if you want a better field of view go with 2.8mm.

also most dvrs/nvrs have an app you can run on your phone to monitor your house anywhere you are.
you can trigger emails to go out etc...

Re: Home video Security System

How exactly do you 'run' cables, be it cat5, baluns, USB cable, etc? Cut into the drywall 'n shit? \:\(

I've got a couple of wireless IP cameras (1 USB cable for power), and while they're HD and all... They only record to an SD card for now. They're highly portable obviously ...

I want to supplement my setup with a 'smart' security system, one of those DIY ones, but it doesn't have some of the 'old-school' parts to them, such as:

- beeping when a door opens (i.e. door sensor)
- keypad

The ones I've seen have a door sensor, but only for alarm. (i.e. they're run on a tiny 3v battery, so to beep every time the door opens would chew thru the battery They also don't have a keypad, foregoing that for 'smarter' methods such as phone and/or keyfob integration. (I want keypad + phone + keyfob)

Re: Home video Security System

anything is possible, but if you don't know framing methods and have experience at looking how a house is setup pre drywall stage it can be a daunting task sometimes.

Last week I was able to run a wire for a keypad. The whole alarm system was wireless, except the keypad needed a plug in power supply or the batteries would only last a week. Basement was fully finished so I only had a 12X12 access panel in the basement to work with. Some creativity, 4-8 foot long fiberglass rods and 4 hours later I was able to get a wire from the electrical panel without making a single hole in drywall. I also went through the sink cabinet in the washroom behind \:\)

ive installed a 4 IPcam FLIR at a house, cameras are 3.6mm but if placed right can cover what you need.
you'll need back boxes to keep your cables in, unless you want to hide them in the wall/brick.

You don't want t to record to the Cloud as your main means of recording. You want to send a backup every day or do a secondary stream of 1fps as a backup. Many nvr have the option to backup. You would have to look into some cloud recording storage servers that offer remote cloud storage. I know of one that's $10 a month for 2 week storage retention

What's the service?

What NVR for ~ 13 POE HIKVISION cameras? Synology? Some of the NVR has 4 ports? So do I get a 16 port POE switch and connect it to one of the 4 ports in the NVR?

Re: Home video Security System

this is one

http://www.totalsecure.ca/Offsiteportal.aspx

As long as the IP camera has more than 1 stream it should be supported as one of the streams is set to a low FPS and set to upload to the remote site.

http://www2.ltsecurityinc.com/en_us/product/1114.html

correct

just connect one of the ports on the switch to the nvr and connect all the cameras onto the poe ports. Make sure you have 1 uplink port to connect to your router for internet access too

another alternative is the blue iris software on a dedicated windows pc
