I know someone that is interested in freshening up their kitchen cabinets without shelling out the money for a big renovation. They're not looking to do it themselves but hire a company that does this sort of thing. My initial thought is that its a bad idea but apparently people do this. Does anyone have any experiences with this? Random Google Pics |

It's not very hard to do, just time consuming. I've done something similar to both the bathrooms in my house (painted, distressed, etc etc) |

i wanted to get to that this year, but next year for sure. |

I've thought about staining mine a different colour, its like an ugly yellow-y wood. Painting seems wrong, but some of those look a lot better. |

I'm curious to see what they look like up close. My guess is the type of wood/mdf would play a big role. I've found a number of DIY online as well as many Toronto based companies that specialize in this. Going rate seems to be $1000-$1500 but that's without doing a lot of research. |

Most should be spraying and use a special vinyl-like paint. Usually it comes out pretty good. I suggest using small felt pads in the inside of the doors (outside corners) after so when they close against the boxes they don't stick or "bang" which could chip/wear. I sprayed my old condo ones black myself and it was a bitch but came out pretty good. |

All white/stainless kitchens look good |

I've painted over stained solid wood doors in my old condo. Shit came out pretty decent and that was just using shitty latex paint lol. It was a quick and cheap way to refresh the place. |

We want to do our's as well. I'm thinking about doing a test to see if I can plastidip it. |

Plastidip? what colour? Shit will come off way too easy. |

Plastidip? is that safe in terms of whether there's any VOCs / fumes that would emit. Wouldn't want that stuff being exposed to all my dishes, cookware and/or cutlery. |

If you want to stain them then that's going you to strip the cupboards, sand, then re-stain. I'd paint them. |

I dunno. I've tried to google it, but it doesn't look like it's been done much before. Need to look into it more. |

From all the painted cabinets that I've seen, the only way this is worth doing is if you are going white. If you go any other colour it won't look as great and will look just like that, old painted cabinets. White paint + new higher end hardware can transform it nicely. |

I'd do a white paint, distress it, it would look great especially with a hint of that pine colour coming through on the edges. You could even do a grey-ish chalk paint as well. If the kitchen is super bright, you could also do black as well. |

For 'standard' (i.e. free) cabinets, I had a choice of: - white 'foil' cabinets (some ghetto coloured stickers) - 'oak' varnished cabinets I wanted white. I could have gotten the 'oak' ones, sanded them down and paint them white myself ... Too much fucking work, so I just went with the ghetto 'foil' cabinets. I can't imagine the amount of work (especially for a new home) painting that shit... It'd be a bitch... |

Spray the doors, roll the sides. No need to spray INSIDE the house. |

I did our bathroom vanity as a test before doing the entire kitchen. Took all the doors/drawers to the garage & sanded them enough to scuff up the entire surface. Sanded the flat sides and front of the cabinet with an electric sander. Put on a coat of General Finishes Java Gel Stain, let dry, very lightly sanded to knock down any high points left by the foam brush. repeat 2 more times. Then I put on a semi-gloss clear, 2 coats. Then put on new hardware that used the same holes. Looks good but took a lot of time. Don't know when I'll ever have time to do the entire kitchen. |

Didn't know builders even put shit cabinets as standard finishing now. |

Most builders cabinets are pretty low grade (but can still look nice). Also wipe down the cabinets with TSP to ensure no oils or grease mess up the painting. |
