I have a basic nofrills internet from Teksavvy, the specific plan is TekSavvy Lite 3...for $30/month + HST. I don't know the specs, I am assuming 3 megs down? This shit isn't cutting it anymore, btw this is my speed currently on wireless (two people are on at the same time), 2 smartphones connected to the wireless, as well as home phone I have a few issues: the current speed and its ability to handle more than one device being connected to the network as well as the wireless strength of the signal. 1. I don't know much about modems/routers/ISP but if my speed test is showing close to advertised speed for download, why is it when I download movies I can only get max of 350kb/s down on Vuze? 2. What speed do I need to adequately service this home with two users without crippling shit constantly? 3. Current hardware, I don't know how old it is exactly, but I am pretty sure it could use an upgrade (suggestions welcome). Modem: Motorola SB5101N SURFboard Cable Modem Router: D-Link DIR-615 Currently both router/modem are in the basement of the house in a central location, because the house footprint is irregular (not a square box, some parts of the house get very weak signal, but for the most part it's ok. I'd like to get better signal, not sure if router should be replaced or if I should just move it to the first floor (1 story home), better connection, replace everything, burn house down? wtf |
I'd take a laptop and plug it directly into the cable modem then do your speed test again (Or test your torrent speeds) My old router was crippling pretty much everything (Linksys/Cisco giant piece of shit) If you get better speeds (Which you should, but nothing crazy) you've found your issue. The torrent speeds should remain unchanged. |
I have done both wireless and hardwired, it's pretty much the same speed wise, but not reliability wise. When I work from home, my outlook lags more frequently on wireless than hardwired. I've run an ethernet cable to my office, which is the furthest room from the router with the weakest wireless signal. |

DSL or Cable? |
Cable |
For an extra $5 a month you can get their 10Mb package.. I'd probably do that. |

Router is part of the issue, the 615 is mediocre at best. |

3 mbit connection = 375 kliobytes per second no issues with your speed |

I'm sure you will find a way to borrow your neighbour's megahertz |

So, you have a few items to consider... - router: correct per everyone. It's shit. That effectively diminishes whatever capacity you have.. Yes, it's an N, but latest and greatest is some kinda bullshit 'AC' stuff... I used to be a Linksys, but apparently since being bought out by Cisco they're not that awesome anymore... I've since gone Asus... (it's an N router, but unplugged. Too lazy; still using Roger's crappy built-in, but will swap it out Q12015.) - They cap your ass at the source, because you bought the RiskyBusiness package. - You can do it the right way of pulling CAT5 (6?) to the weak areas of the house; I'd do the router swap first. An alternative is to buy a powerline adapter kit. - I would *not* consider this 'bridge mode' thingie... Choco or other super nerds can chime in, but my understanding it as soon as you throw in a BRIDGE, it effectively CHOPS your capacity by 50%, because it's 'routing' shit... i.e. it's like 'broken telephone'... - Now, your amateur tests didn't tell us what kind of tests/things you were doing with the 2 phones + 2 computers... Here's where you can tweak that shit using the router's QoS .... i.e. give priority to certain types of traffic, to specific computers/phones, etc... - You may be on a very crowded or shitty channel frequency... i.e. I think default is Channel 11. Scan the area, and I'm sure there's at least a few neighbours with the default channel. Note that not-so-common frequencies also aren't that great either (you're 'further' from the sweet spot frequency I think... Again, Choco or another networking nerd can chime in. (There are apps out there, some potentially within the router or part of their software...) - If you have a REALLY old-school wireless doing 'B' protocols, it drops all other wireless things down to B speeds... (This is old school, not sure if it even happens anymore. Back in the day it was an issue.) When/if looking for a new modem, look into that AC shit, and also dual-band and/or dual-band 'bonding' bullshit... My ghetto router has the 2.4hz and 5Ghz bands, but they're not 'bonded'... |
It really doesn't matter if a bridge cuts have his wireless speed, it's not affecting the internet coming into the house, it's only affecting the speed between the laptop > repeater > router. Even at half, it's more then his internet speed. |
Risky will never buy into AC with beam forming technology. Pull cat 5, bridge mode sucks ass for any power user. |
I've already pulled cat 5 to two rooms, with an additional line coming. I don't understand why you guys say the router sucks if it's getting the same speed as if when I am hardwired. Like I said, my only issue is that my work computer freezes for whatever reason more often on wireless than on cat5. However, download speed and surfing seem to be the same. I will upgrade the internet today and report back. |

computer freezing = computer issue. Not a router problem. clean off all the ghey pron |

Called them, they said they can't upgrade my service without me upgrading my modem first. They are offering me some modem called DCM476, which is $99+$10 shipping + HST. Also on their website they have a bunch of modems listed, which are approved and I can buy at the store: THoughts on what modem to get? Vas, I've got a SB6141 here that I bought to use with Rogers (But they blow and won't allow it). So it's been sitting here collecting dust. |

dude, that upload can barely handle the conference calls, let alone doing other things at the same time... you needs to upgrade. check if teksavvy dsl is available in your area, their prices are decent for more upspeed. ib4riskydoingmfcstreamtomakemoney |

Make a canntena antenna and see if you can borrow some wifi from surrounding establishments from the comfort of your home. |
