Secondary cars and rust check

I know a few here have a few cars, and I too am putting too many kms on my M3 so I'm looking at a nice car to take some of the load off and help keep the m3 clean for when I want it. My F150 doesnt meet this goal either. I've short listed 2007+ G35/G37 auto 4dr.

1) private sellers are out to lunch. I'm finding they want a premium over dealer pricing.
2) do people still do rust check in the fall?
3) anyone here have a lead on something interesting for sale?
4) for those who cringed when they saw my car choice- wwcsi do? Ive evaluated it all already but there's still time.

Re: Secondary cars and rust check

I am biased, but I was in a similar position close to a year ago.

I wanted a presentable beater/dd that's reliable/comfortable/peppy/etc. I looked at a ton of cars prior to that. I didn't consider the G35/37, don't like them at all (have driven multiple variants). Narrowed it down the 3rd gen TL, initially I was set on buying Jeff's is350...but timing didn't work in my favour. I looked at a few other ones but couldn't find something I liked and then my civic died so I was in a pinch.

Anyway the TL checked off all my boxes, I am extremely happy with the car, my only complain is the rear seats don't fold down and the turning radius sucks, so parking can be a pita in tight spots. Two very small draw backs, otherwise this is an amazing car, and an amazing value on the used market.

They also look pretty good \:\)

I had it rust proofed at regs in Scarborough right after I bought it.

Re: Secondary cars and rust check

Is that your TL? It looks great, I've never driven one. Did going to FWD bother you? I don't mind when it's rental cars but we've become quite the RWD family.

Turning circle matters to me, as my GF and are deeply immersed in condo life and parking sucks. Fold down seats, I honestly never considered a modern car wouldn't have that - and I just found out the G sedan doesn't either.

Re: Secondary cars and rust check

Yea that's mine in the midst of a shady deal by the airport.

If we have a meet I will let you drive it. The turning radius isn't the worst but compared to a regular car you really have to make wide turns into spots or to solve that issue just start backing into spots - problem solved.

The fwd doesn't bother me as it's a daily. Sure there are times when I will give it a go out of a turn and it's sadface.gif but other than that I couldn't care less.

Love that gen. TL.

Acura has nothing but shit to offer now. The TLX looks like a fucking accord and they toned down the ugly beak but then do the stupid jeweled headlights.

Wes the TL drives really nice imo. Great pick up for a used car.

Re: Secondary cars and rust check

IMO for a comfortable daily you want something comfortable, good on gas, reliable, and atleast isn't a 1996 Buick to drive; also it should be cost effective because let's face it, they get beat to shit hence why it's a daily. Vas made a great choice with the TL, that gen is wicked. I was looking at them myself but the only thing holding me back was the v6, I think I do a bit more driving than vas so I wanted the 4 banger.

I don't care what anyone says, fwd is fine, great in the winter, and if you want something sportier well that's what the emtree is for. I would look for a TL like vas, tsx, 2010 gen accord which can be had for cheap etc if you don't need a lot of room maybe a csx, it comes optioned pretty good nav, hids.

Re: Secondary cars and rust check

I also fall to understand driveline snobbery when most any rwd platform pushes so much out of the box that it makes no difference anyway. Plus, unless it sees track time, one would be hard pressed to reap the benefits of being able to get on the gas sooner on corner exit. I would also agree that fwd is a good choice for a dd. Efficient, easy traction and can drive well to boot. Want rotation? Trail the throttle or left foot brake. The latter arguably takes more finesse than throttle steering a rwd car on the street. I wouldn't rule out a nice fwd car. I haven't seen any mention of budget, but stuff like tsx, tl, accord seem like solid contenders. Or a Volvo (dunno howhu those are used though), or Saab or even a Subaru.

It's not that bad on gas I am getting 10.5l/100km with mostly city driving. On the highway I can easily get mid to high 6l/100km. Considering side/weight I think it's pretty respectable.

Wow lots of TL love. I'll check it out see if its too big or something. I don't need rwd I just prefer it. I'm used to it and like how I won't typically spin when accelerating into a corner and how it seems with my cars anyway how the front end doesn't lift as much accelerating. I'll drive a to.

Don't even bother talking about reliability, Honda today is not the same as the Honda's 10+ years ago. It's quite obvious Acura needs to be valued positioned since they offer ZERO for looks, how else are they going to get people to buy their heaps. Look at the steep discounts that Acura has to offer just to get rid their cars. Lol dude nothing is the same as 10 years ago, look at Kia and Hyundai, are they the same? No, but Honda has still been dead nuts reliable. You need your eyes checked if you think they offer 0 for looks; your high if you think Chevy sedans look better, or Nissan, he'll even the 2014 3 series is questionable. acura has a few years that they fucked up the styling (the gen TL after riskys) but they corrected that, the ilx looks good, the RL looks sick, the mdx looks good, the Rdx looks decent (it's no Nissan juke) and the tlx looks wicked. Btw theres plenty of good looking cars these days, the ford fiesta, the kia optima, the Hyundai genesis , You just hatin lol

Re: Secondary cars and rust check

DO NOT buy a land barge w/ 4 cyl + auto. The TSX isn't a small/light car (new gen). If you are going land barge and need auto you have to go with the V6. I am surprised that the new gen which is 3,400 lbs pretty much same my gen TL is even *fun* with a manual I4. I don't believe it, numbers don't add up, but I haven't driven one so I don't know. I am positive it's very uninspriing to drive doe.

How did you narrow it down to the TSX? Did you drive the IS350, which seems most fitting for you? Did you drive a TL?

Is this another one of those mid day epiphanies you had? I am going to assume you've already put a deposit on one at Faraz and associates \:\|

Re: Secondary cars and rust check

I drove one with the auto it seemed ok. I drove the M3 to the dealer so of course it didn't feel like a sports car but I'm not looking for that. TL is too big. I've driven the IS250 a lot and didn't like it at all, how much different can it be?

No deposits left. I'm trying to not make the wrong choice here. Since you asked, I looked at all the cars mid teen's Japanese and German.

3 series - no thanks, I'm not buying a 3rd one and it'll be too similar and inferior to my M3.

5 series - too big

c class - Drove one, hated it.

e class - drove one, hated it (LOVED it, but it's ok to borrow from my parents)

A4 - maybe.

A6 - no thank you.

Honda - nope

Acura - TSX ok size, TL too big and would be end of model year to get the price right

Nissan/Infinity - All G's I've seen don't seem to wear well.

Toyota/Lexus - really didn't like the is250 and I'm not looking to mod to make it less squishy.

Mazda - nothing for me over there.

That takes me to TSX and A4. If I'm buying for some entry level luxury and long term reliability and maintenance costs seemed like the TSX is the winner. You think I should give the IS another shot?

How did you narrow it down to the TSX? Did you drive the IS350, which seems most fitting for you? Did you drive a TL?

Is this another one of those mid day epiphanies you had? I am going to assume you've already put a deposit on one at Faraz and associates \:\|

drive mine. you're right, its a heavy(er) car, and i think it's just slightly smaller than your car, but it really doesn't feel like it. it doesn't roll, handles nice and responsive, and the 6spd is super short. i can city drive in 6th gear, often times skipping 5th. i think alot of the weight is from the stupid big gas tank, doesn't need to be that big imo.

^ Wes drive that one just to see (looks like a decent deal, comes with snows too). I don't know how different the typs S is, but it should be fun if my regular trim TL is a fun drive. I am assuming you are shying away from the TL because it's now 2 gens old?

i've driven them all, the TL-S quite the fun over the base, ESPECIALLY the 6spd...it hauls ass. it's noticeable when "you're on it". if you're just puddling along, then (of course) they feel similar. granted with the S, expected worse gas mileage and possibly slightly higher service cost (but not by much unless you pop something engine related).

Correct on 2 gens old. And its big. I spend a lot of time in underground parking. My place. Gf. Groceries. Movies. Bachata class. Etc.

In NJ now. Will resume next week.

Re: Secondary cars and rust check

The TL and new TSX are almost the same size, just a FYI:

Length
TL: 189.3" TSX: 185.6"

Width
TL: 72.2" TSX: 72.4"

Weight
TL: 3480 lbs TSX: 3400lbs

Yes it's 2 gens old, but they are cheaper and like you said the car will spend a lot of time in misc parking lots and getting beat up so it makes more sense. They also don't age as bad as infinitis that you are looking. Again, not trying to convince you to buy one, just saying value wise I think they are your best bet out of the stuff you've listed.

But if you want to spend at the max of your budget get the IS350.

TSX is ok in size but TL is too big?

TL is only longer by 10 cm and wider by 5 cm -- unless you're squeezing into tight spots or cutting in and out of traffic all the time; it's pretty much the same size.

This point would stand for a 3 vs. 5 series - there's a 30 cm difference and could be a deal breaker in parking into a garage of newer cookie cutter homes.

IS250 is under powered -- 350 is ok... if you're a power monger, find a used IS-F .. '08 and '09s are decently priced.

lol used IS-F as a daily? did i read that right?

5.0ltr V8 20.2 average mpg.....

and risky, there's a difference between gens,

2010 TL length: 195.5 in TSX: 185.6 in

TL width: 74.0 in TSX: 72.4 in

TL weight: 3,948 lbs (sh-awd) TSX: 3,470 lb (6spd is 70lbs lighter)

but you're right, your gen TL and the second gen tsx are about the same size/weight.

it may have been one of ours lol, was driving a few of them 2wks ago for mileage...it's a nice car man. i think it went on sale about a week ago? i've seen 3-4 on the road already. looks nice in black, but there's this crazy gray colour (we have one here at the office), that's almost a matte paint but with a shine/sheen in it...very different.

the 8 and 9 spd trans's are so smooth it's nuts, the 4cyl feels like a small V6, the ride is nice too...better than RLX even lol. as for look, eih...typical 4dr lines, weird acura front but i love the rear end/lights.

Only thing I've driven recently was a 2010 TL, wanted to see if I'd fall in love with the interior. I liked it a lot but it's too much money for a clean one with the options I want. Going out tomorrow to finally drive an 08 TL, but from all research it's looking like it'll be the car - let's see if driving it confirms that. I still struggle with the fact that I can get a TSX that's a model year newer for similar pricing but I know it's "less car".

Drove lots of stuff.
- a few <=08 TL's
- a few >=09 TL's
- a few TSX's
- Many is350's
- Many G37(x)'s
- a few e class' (dad was buying an on paper fits my criteria)
- a few 5 series'
- a few c class'
- a few A4's

Tried to buy a few cars in there, including one really nice is350, but we were always too far apart. Finally, bought a 2009 G37x. Black on black, premium package, navigation package, and technology package, winter and summer wheels.

You have no idea what you are talking about, for starters lumping in the IS250 and IS350 as if it's the same car and then telling me the IS350 is a worse car in relation to a G37, lol ok man. If you are talking strictly driving the G37 does feel a bit sportier, I agree the IS350 can feel a but underwhelming in relation, but we are splitting hairs here, both are fat automatic pigs. I like the more refined IS350 feel to be honest.

The IS350 is better than a G37 in every imaginable way except price...which you get back when you sell as they have better resale anyway. Damn Lexus hater, holy crap.

maybe this beater is just to preserve the m3?
save it from winter use?

I always laugh at this logic.

Spend 25k after tax on a winter beater to preserve a 45k car. (omg my car is an investment/asset, wow warren such buffet )

wow maths, making sense.

If you can't afford to put mileage on a half a decade old m3 then you shouldn't buy it. /rant

Not saying this is OP's situation, just hatorading on stupidity in general \:D

How much is a TL vs. a e36 m3 again?

TL is like $250, M3 is basically scrap metal.

I always warm up the car. Even if I make a short trip (say 3km away), I drive around for 15 minutes prior + let it idle at cold start for around 30 sec before finishing my trip. At the very minimum, I want oil to get to operating temp.

So to answer your question, yes XD That pic is after a half hour of driving in 10 degree weather. The car is just baad in the city. That # is like all time fuel consumption doe. With track in there

Nothing at all, and I never complained about economy either. I love daily driving it but traffic sucks so I'll admit an auto is nice from time to time. Also I take road trips so 2000-3000kms in the M3 for a weekend just doesn't make sense. Further, GF won't drive the M3 so unless we take her car (which doesn't have cruise FWIW) I'm doing all the driving. Also I like the M3, A LOT, and I've put 13000kms on it in 6 months, 2.5 of which I've been out of the country. I'd rather it not have 200k on it before I know it. Further, rod bearings are getting done in March, I want to do them myself and just don't have the time or resources now. Besides, I can, so why not.

No pics available as of yet. To be honest I can see the deal falling through. I'll post about that once I know for sure.

Disclaimer - results and opinions may not be typical, these are based off the samples I had access to within my budget.

<=08 TL's - nice car, would have to do timing belts on all that I had seen, drove type-s and non, liked them both but the drive was a little harsh for what I wanted. Kept in back of my mind it's a FWD.

>=09 TL's - really nice car, but, tooooo big. Turn around and look at back seat passengers it was like I was in a town car. Also, hard to get with all the packages I wanted in my price.

TSX's - I liked this, but, it's very entry level luxury car, which is fine. Resale is quite high on these.

is350's - most were BEATTTTTTT. The paint must be as thin as a piece of paper. interiors seemed to hold up alright though. I liked the drive however I'd drive two back to back and seats would feel different. Road noise too but that was the tires. I tried to buy one of these but we were too far apart.

G37(x)'s - had that substantial luxurious feel. Lots of amenities. Only offering here (I believe) with intelligent cruise. Easy to find with decent features. Paint isn't awesome on these either but compared to the IS's it was awesome. AWD is nice. The one I bought comes with winter and summers.

e class' - nice to drive but I'm just not old enough for this. I drove an 08 E300 to buy the G37x actually.

5 series' - too big, and honestly compared to the M3 the materials in other BMW's in my price range were not the premium packages so I didn't want a car that's so similar but offering an inferior experience.

c class' - felt small, cramped, econo box ish, expensive, vinyl? Really?

<09 A4's - See c class but inexpensive.

One thing I did notice is that as cars were aging people were skimping out on matching tires, rotors with pads (>2 sets of pads / rotor with huge lips), cheap noisy tires, etc.

Re: Secondary cars and rust check

I've got Sailun's on the F150 and they've been ok but it's a beater truck and it came with them. The Sailun's that came on the E300 are pretty good but they're brand new.

waiiiiiiiit.
first, your 5500lb beast is diesel XD
Second, my 18.8l/100 is all time. So that includes lapping days. My real mpg is around 13l/100 per tank. 13 to 14. I drive mainly city doe, and I beat on it after all temps are nominal \:D

Re: Secondary cars and rust check

87zcsi, u found 5 series to be inferior in experience to m3 even in the interior? which gen 5 did u test? The 5s seem quite nice in the interior imo. the leather is better, and the trim/switch gear in general are nicer.

......or maybe it's bc i am comparing m5 to m3. m5 is nicer inside fo sho (e60 m5 vs e90 m3)

I believe it's cause you're comparing M's. The ones in my budget were leatherette.

This was the biggest eye opener when I worked for auto trader. The older the luxury car, the more ways people found to cut corners on maintenance and safety issues.
