Re: 918 on fire in caledon

venture captialist and recent dragon on dragons den

described as a mix between mick jagger and warren buffet

from the pics and stories of him, that seems about accurate

word is that fuel spilled on the hot exhaust (which exits upward out of the engine cover)

sucks for the owner if it was human error - i guess he'll just have to suck it up, buy and wait for another one.

Re: 918 on fire in caledon

the car has openings on both sides...but based on this picture the filler would be on the driver side

Re: 918 on fire in caledon

haha yea i said originally it was the passenger as that seems to be the german standard

but looks like the electric power hookup is on the pass side in this case

so i dunno how/why the fuel spilled.

sucks for whomever at Porsche fought to have those exhausts exit in that way.

he squeegeed the gas ...but it doesnt look like it hit the exhaust pipes?

what would be hot enough in the side inlet to ignite gas? weird.

yeah i heard this story on ctv last night too, very odd. "apparently" there's video of him overfilling the tank, so he squeegeed the excess gas back towards the rear engine bay area, and it somehow dripped (enough?) onto something to start the fire....we can only assume hot exhaust pipes? cat maybe? who knows.

not sure if he was trying to clean the spillage or what? (I've done it when overfilling/spilling on the side of my car - ghetto). i'd hope he'd know better than to actually push the gas back towards the engine bay. granted i guess you'd think that kinda fiery result shouldn't be normal? found a flaw in porsche design, or just a dumb move by the owner?

funny how he can 'laugh' at losing a $1mil car...he prob won't be laughing if insurance doesn't cover it (then again, he can prob eat the cost either way).

Re: 918 on fire in caledon

lol. Im starting to wonder if there was enough vapor in the air. combined with the hot "everything" around him...that it sort of spontaneously went up. cause its dat vapor that burns/ignites.
