Small Hardwood install project - school a newb

Wife is bugging me to finish the stairs project I did earlier. Just need to have some hardwood installed on the top landing to replace the carpet that's currently there. I'm going to use some of the extra boards from the main floor install so want to keep this as inexpensive as possible.

Watching this vid it looks pretty straight forward, especially for a stair landing that would take maybe 9 boards max plus the stair nose.

So a few questions:
1. Could I take the boards somewhere to have them pre-cut? Would only be probably 4 full length boards cut to size so would be nice if I don't have to rent and haul a table saw back and forth.

2. Flooring on main floor runs north/south but looks like I would have to run these boards east/west to have the stair nose fit the grooves. Yes/No?

3. Easy enough just to hammer the few boards without a nail gun? Should I glue?

If I ran the boards on the stair landing in the same direction as the floor board downstairs, it would look kinda like this (assume the horizontal board in the first pic is the stair nose.

vs matching the direction of the stair nose to fit the grooves like this:

OP, I am not hardwood floor pro and when I did my floors at home I talked to a lot of people/read books/watched vids, there is some conflicting information and it was 2 years ago+ that I did this work.

What you are proposing to do is common/doable, I don't think there is an issue, IIRC you don't want to gluing planks down, in my case I did the main plank row butting up to the stair nosing (that's what all installers told me to do).

In your case since you want to install the planks perpendicular to the nosing I don't think you need glue, stapling them will be fine imo.

Painted a very dark brown, the steps were rounded at the ends so didn't see a need to do anything more to them than sand/prime/paint.

Make sure to put some underlayment underneath that landing, and that the thickness of the hardwood sits flush. If it doesn't, you'll have to get a table saw/mitre saw and cut the edge pieces at an angle...

(Hardwood installer had to do that for my landing)

re: stapling, I think they stapled as much as they could, then the last piece was stapled straight through (i.e. you can see a nail head or 2...)

Standard length, and they are EXPENSIVE. Trust me, I never knew how expensive nosing was until I went to *that* part of the store

Some home depots have a scrap bin with returned/damaged nosing pieces, in the flooring areas near the transition pieces. You can usually get those for 50%+ off.

Finally got around to doing this, took a full day off work which quickly turned into a half day off as my Director and Exec were out leaving me to answer a bunch of admin stuff.

Excuse the poor pics.

Down to bare bones

Baseboards came off without snapping, may re-use them.

Went to Rona, Lowes and home depot trying to find a finished stair noseing that would match...good to go. Asked a few about options of gluing vs nailing, they said to glue and nail the nose and then glue the rest as it is a small area. Got the glue too, a few wood flooring nails and off to do the install.

I get home and pull out the extra hardwood i had stashed in the basement. For some reason I assumed I had long boards left but not enough to do the project so will have to do more cutting then I had planned. Go back to home depot and rent a table saw.

Ok ready to go, wood is cut and roughed in how I would like it placed, I'm getting rushed now cause I have the car and will need to pick up the kids soon.

Ready to glue. Get two pumps in and.....

Well it was my father's gun and probably older than I am, well off to Canadian tire for a new one.

Get the kids, make dinner and back to work again. Got it done before their bedtime and surprised the wife when she got home.

Ya I know, I have to retouch the paint on the stairs.

All in all, not bad for my first attempt at installing hardwood but I am not quitting my day job anytime soon.

Good job, looks decent, not too sure about the surroundings and colour matching(stairs, etc).

Looking at this, it's a nice reflection for me personally. What takes a normal person about a day is like a 45 min job for an experienced contractor. Crazy how much time it takes to do something when you've never done it.

Thanks guys. The colour difference is exaggerated in the pic, it's not that much of a contrast looking at it face on. The pic above with the painter tape still on is a truer look to real life.

Ya I know what you mean Vas. I was thinking max 30 mins of cutting then install in an hour,didn't work out that way.
