Visited Shannonville this past Sunday in the german Camry. It was pretty awesome--the car surpassed my every expectation. For context, I was doing a best lap time of 2:04.9 in the Boss. The S4 in stock configuration did 2:06.3. As well, fatso hooked me up with some Castrol SRF fluid on the cheap. So everyone go see him for some wicked fluid (the best I've used yet!). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=viqCEFH8Ahk The red S4 I'm chasing in the video is my buddys. His car has some awesome stuff: Bisltein PSS10, stoptech bbk, chassis reinforcements etc etc. As expected, the greatest thing to manage with this car is understeer and keeping front tires in check. Once this car begins to push, I either maintain or reduce steering angle, and lift. Unfortunately, the rear end doesn't tend to rotate off power, so the only way the car maintains the line is through the scrubbing of the front tires. Not the fastest way, but that's what you're dealing with when you have awd, stock alignment and 55/45 weight distribution. I countered this with a lot of trail braking, and really chucking the car into the corner to get it pointed to the apex. Once the machine is pointed at the apex, you can have fun with the go-pedal. Roll onto the gas hard and the car has a mild rear steer effect at high speeds, tightening the line as you power through a corner. This is the greatest advantage of the car. As a result of the torque vectoring rear diff, one can get on power not only earlier than usual--but also much harder than usual. The action of rolling into the throttle can be much swifter with this car. It simply slingshots out of the corner and eats up the pavement really rapidly. There are a number of corners where I hit WOT the instant I'm pointed to the apex. These corners were turn 4 (the moss carousel exit), turn 5, turn 11 & 12. Brakes actually have better initial bite than the Boss did, and less brake dive. I was more confident in being aggressive with my braking and really compressing my braking zones--despite the car being 4000lbs and hitting 180 down the back straight (per my lap timer), I'm hitting the brakes at the 75 ft mark. Coles notes: surprisingly fast. Expected entry understeer. Exit is where the car shines. Sport diff is worth it. Lots of lap traffic, excuse my cursing XD |

That would be smart if you know that these guys knew what they were doing out there and were fully aware of their surroundings. I aint putting myself or other drivers in that level of risk. It has been a while that i've driven something this fun Back to indefinite storage it goes I only timed one lap, was a few seconds behind 4 age's time. Not sure what my fastest lap was doe. Euphoric was faster than me, his car is setup pretty badass overall + mad skillz |

whoa, whoa, whoa! Where are da videos! Glad you had fun. Please come out next year! Sorry I wasn't able to make it T_T What was the resulting lap time? You must've rocked it! Wut dat offroading do |
I could only do 3 laps at a time because my rear tires were smoking the whole way. A few issues, I had my ABS disconnected and everytime I'd come to a hard stop my rears would lock up, so that slowed me down on certain turns and I couldn't really afford to brake mid turn . Lesson learned, apparently driving these cars without ABS is a huge PITA, confirmed by off roading First time on this track in 10 years, had to re learn errrthang. As far as hator, I am running missmatched and bald tires too that are flat spotted, you mad? Time was 2:11.8 or something like that, again I only timed one lap. I wonder how Euphoric did. |
I need to do a square setup and plug in ABS, i think that would transform the car. |
PRO. 2:11.8 in a broken car, with 10 year hiatus is a solid lap time. FWIW I also ran no abs in my e36. Didn't bother me, and no lock up issues. But I didn't run drag radials on a road course WTF. U CRAY. Hahaha! BTW just saw your video. That was insane HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. It's like you made your own track. You didn't care for the pavement. Grass rally. |

WOW! What car was doing 1:58? Another ITR? i know of one that did 1:58. k swap, crazy gearset and final drive...cage and mega stripped out. The S4 is actually a turtle down the back straight. Bc if it's awful understeer, it pushes slowly through the turn leading onto the straight. per my lap timer, my exit speed on that corner is a pathetic 38. Top speed on the straight is 179--and I brake around the 75ft mark. pretty slow. Boss hit like 195-200 (i could shift to 5th gear!) |

no no, '12 civic with k20/mods/etc. not ITR. i know James H's ITR is wicked fast, great driver too. his team/shop is from like kitchner or something. i believe he has the fwd record at TMP now. oh wow, for real eh? interesting...woulda guessed it would be SOMEWHAT closer to stang speed at least, but makes sense what you're saying. |

Give it to me Pretty sure it's because of the disconnected ABS, seems like it's a common issue from what I've read, hence why people keep their ABS plugged. All the weight up front, hard on the brakes, no weight in the back, rear will lock before the front...ABS prevents that. You probably didn't brake hard enough XD |

drag radials are grippy doe. Anything I have ever read about abs being unhooked from these cars = bad news. Not that wouldve prevented that new track layout construction lol plow |

Entire brake system has been overhauled on the car from lines to pads, to calipers to rotors, sensors, etc. It's the ABS bruh, maybe you didn't have enough watts in your legs to lock up the wheels I've seen another fool like me lock up like that at the track before, didn't really click in until Euphoric brought it up |

From what I remember from that same turn in the teg, in order to get enough traction at the higher speeds I had to do a quick brake while straight, turn immediately turn and full throttle in order not to spin. So let me axe you this csi elite race crew. My car is pretty much stock aside from suspension and an intake. I don't really care for going faster, but I'd like to get it buttoned down for da twistiez. The only things I am going to do are fix the lock up issue and get tires for next year. Should I go squared or should I stay staggered? Long term going squared is cheaper as I'd go back down to a 17" rim, can rotate tires, and generally 17" tires are cheaper...or just get staggered 18" tires 225/40/18 and 255/35/18 for my current wheels. Not sure what to do, biggest issue with going squared is finding the right wheels, i'd like an OEM squared setup, which could prove expensive (buy two sets of oem wheels, sell the narrower wheels, etc). This is making me lean towards just keeping my wheels and just getting new tires and that's it. Thoughts? |
It was that much new. + did the ebay headers($60 come at me bro.) and messed around with the midpipe a bit. So its louder than it used to be. thanks for the compliments. I definitely enjoy the experience of the car at wot..even if its slow in a straight line by todays standards. |

just keep your wheels and get new rubber imo. They look great and you run more on the street anyways. Shouldve done a few more laps with you on my tail. Next time! |

depends on how much you wanna push it. once you hear them start to squeal, then you know you're a the limit where you're starting to lose grip (and time) on your lap, and you're starting to kill them. once you've lapped a lot, you get to learn your car's limits...ie. i know just the point where i can make my tires last or just have edges rounded by the end of 1 lapping even (maybe 2). same goes for brake pad wear. again having a lighter car helps. you should come. street tires will show different results vs. r-comps. |
least most of you guys have enough room to lug another set of 4 tires to the track http://www.kijiji.ca/v-tires-rims/city-o...gationFlag=true that will be super fun |

Boss lasted 9 lapping days - 2 mosport, 6 shannonville, 1 cayuga (wet). 1 of which was a time attack. For E36, definitely go square. I agree with the front sway option, though I'm not sure it's needed at this point. Play with that sort of thing after you get accustomed to driving it on the track and figure out what your preferences are. FWIW I ran square (235) with stock sways + PSS9. Worked for me, though there was a lot of corner entry understeer (which the sway remedies). Forget about the tech doe. More seat time (with fixed brakes) will do you a whole world of good. I'd opt for that instead. You havent hit the top of what the car can deliver at this point. More driving and feeling it out at the limit will be more beneficial imo. And I'd bet that your fronts chunked because your car was pushing, and you dialed in even more steering angle as it was pushing (a logical thing to do, but it's incorrect!). If you smooth it out, you'll find more time on the table--even with a staggered setup. |
^agreed. and lots of guys who lap tons do run a square setup on rwd cars be it s2k, m3 even miata's. but yeah the sway i did on my old s2k in front helps very much, esp with proper camber/toe setup in the rear, tho i had smaller fronts (a touch wider than stock) which was fine for me, sicne i drove daily. and yeah, tires last awhile...you'll notice wear first 1-2 days as mentioned, but honestly i have mine (used dd) last 2 season easy (i only go 2-4 times per season). |

Euphoric, how do the RS3's hold up? I am considering those for next season. |

i had those before the RT615k i have now, RS3's are a great tire and super sticky when hot (esp for the price). they break away quite nicely and are soft. wear though will get you quicker than other tires i found, but it still wans't THAT bad. |

They seem to be ok. But I havent really given them a good look over. Car came home, went into garage and hasnt been touched. This weekend Ill have a look. |

Thanks for the feedback. Just concerned about sidewall stiffness, bc I drive a 4000lb barge. I'm rocking 37psi up front to mitigate roll over. It works, though the lack of camber is still killing it. I'm not sure how much camber I can get at stock ride height...I assume I'm lucky if I can get -2.5 |

thats probably all I have if I am lucky. havent measured tire pressure in ages. problem? |

how dat audi oil burn/level doe? |
Euphoric - wtf XD No measuring needed. 2:05. bauce. Screamin - zero oil consumption at any track day. is it supposed to be bad? I know the early v8's were. I have not had any issue though. Mind you, I've already changed oil once in 3k km, so maybe i never had oil in there long enough to burn. That being said, it's for sure burning less than an E90 m3. Hatorade would know a thing or two about that. HAHA |

ha yeah. naw, i dunno how the news ones are, just curious. |

Guilty as charged, I will be honest I did a pretty crappy job following a good line and I don't know the track at all. I've been on it twice before in my life in like 2003/2004. I will take the advice and keep wheels, just grab tires and work on becoming smoother and not a late braking butcher |

Who needs an oil change when it burns off right? |

I was just trying to get some footage :p What is your best time with the s2k on that circuit ? |

don't recall exactly. been over 5 years. i THINK i have the lap sheets buried amongst my other notes in one of the binders somewhere, see if i can find the notes. didn't have an in dash lap timer back then. so it was all by external help. edit: if you ran 2:04, pretty damn sure u're faster than I. don't think i got south of the 5 mark. back then only 2 or 3 guys ran 1.59 or 2 flat; then there was a pack stuck in the 5s & 6s, and the rest are basically all over the place. Now i'm hearing it's pretty routine to be in the 2.01s or 2.02s. So basically in 6-7 years the average field picked up almost 3 seconds. |

^Really fast guys are doing sub 2's in time attacks these days Corey Whiteman, who pilots an e36 325 did 1:57 this year. Not sure what the change was, but he was still sub 2:00 last year on street tires (rivals) and stock power. Pure skill! Another guy did 1:58 or something in his FD RX7 with a broken 3rd gear at shannonville (!!!). Beat out the china guy in the 458 scuderra on hoosiers. that guy was very displeased haha |

Did you ever run mosport? Dig up the notes on that for your lap times |
