Nice out today, anyone start their spring detail?

you guys better not be using chamois anymore....and if you still are i'll be doing a order from e-shine soon so I can grab some more waffle weave towels if anyone wants/needs one.

my car, altho it doesn't have any scratches or dents, it was probably never waxed:

after

clayed and polished:

sealed and wheels/tires dressed and windows cleaned. still need to throw the rims on, polish the exhaust and de-badge it.

oh and btw; I needed a new clay bar, went into crappy tire thinking all clays are made alike

never ever buy the simonize clay bar. it's such a POS. it's not even like clay, it's more like a brick of bubble gum that you can't even kneed over and starts to just come apart after two panels. lucky I had a new meguires one that I found at home but I find that its not aggressive enough. after using them all the yellow mothers bar works the best.

sick tsx work. yeah eshine.ca just had a pretty good sale but another will come up soon. there's something about a good white paint that just comes thru SO well after a proper detail!

yeah clay bars have quite the difference. i used a good brand from eshine was back on teh s2k (forget the name), then used mothers on the STI and it was just ok. much harder (similar to what you described) than the other higher end stuff. not sure if meguires has a claybar but i wonder how their quality is?

waffle weave towels FTW. shit'll soak up more water than vas's tears, crying after missing out on a 18yr old washer/dryer set on the side of the road for garabage day.

Meguiars does have a claybar. I used it on the M. I don't think my car was EVER waxed either lol. My bar turned brown...holy shit!

Just went to town with a 3000 grit sand paper to get rid of scratches. I was going to order 105/205 from eshine last year but they were out of stock. Found meguairs over the shelf Ultimate Compound to be just aggressive enough to get rid of swirls.

Chamois take forever because they fill with water so fast, so you have to keep wringing them out, that and they leave a butt ton of swirl marks behind. Not to mention they stink and are expensive. $20 or whatever and you'll never look back and it'll last you forever.

Thanks fellas, I started out with the clay, then 205 on a orange lake country pad. Normally I would use a white polishing pad but the car had some decent swirling (hard to see on a white car) but I knew it was a good amount because the pearl wasn't showing like it should. So tested the more aggressive pad with the 205 and it worked great.

After sealed with the Blackfire wet diamond on a blue finishing pad.

Bill bring over that 205/105 and we Will knock it out quick!

It's from the plows scraping up the roads in the winter, it's gotta be iron or some sort of metal dust from the plows/road surface... So it is rust but it's not rust from your car \:\) My parents car has it all over the front fenders, you can pick it off with your fingernail.

Be careful with M105. Although it does make very quick work of removing scratches, on most paints it is removing way more clear coat than you need to be. Its basically liquid sandpaper and I see it being used way too much.

You're right, I've used it once and it dusted and was a super pain in the ass to take off. If I actually used it, it would have to be on a car that was really screwed, otherwise the 205 pretty much gets out everything.

Nice results risky! I bet it took you long because you spent a lot of time masking. I just mask quick and I guess I've been doing it long enough that I can keep it away from the edges but it useto take me a good 10-12hrs.

Also sealing can be done QuickTime, the Blackfire on blue pad goes on like butter, and doesn't haze fast, so I can do hood/fender/door/rear door and quarter panel before stopping to wipe it all off.

It has to be the pressure and in the pad's defense they are still usable, but i just found them to be way too soft and it was taking longer and longer to remove swirls. Once I switched to a new pad and went over the same spot it was basically half the effort.

I personally wouldn't use an old/used pad on a new detail, but that's just me.

you just have to take care of them, I've never replaced pads. just have to wash them out with a bit of dish soap and let them air dry. instead of putting more pressure I would turn up speed and use 1/2 of the pressure, or a more aggressive pad. what color pad were you using risky? even still new pads are always nice. or actually, are you using the little ones?

I'd still rock those if they were forged. I love polished lip on any rim!

That exhaust would look mint if you used metal polish & 2000 grit sandpaper. Minimal work

Washed it for the first time on the weekend but I'll need to wax it soon.

-Painted the calipers silver
-Put on the red vinyl to get rid of the ugly yellow signals today (looks way better)
-Light smoke vinyl on the lower reflectors to better blend in with taillights
-Put in Philips Ultinon bulbs in headlights
-Wheel spacers on the way
-Pick up Tanabe springs Saturday

Looks better with no perceivable difference in light output (even though technically it may be slightly less). It's the little details that make a car look better than a stock one while still looking close to OEM.

This spray paint that I always use and lots of masking and patience. It holds up pretty well and every spring I just lightly hit it again. I can check into what kind it is but it's not a specialty paint it's a metallic silver that's very durable.

I wanted pre cut for the rear signals (they're a funny shape) so there is one place on eBay that has it but lamin-x red is good. Just depends on the car but honestly it matches right on. I had it on my is350 the entire time I owned it and it was perfect. Looks like how it should have from the factory and lights up fine too.

Headlights yellow due to the UV coating wearing out, so unless this spray on stuff has UV protection it isn't going to do jack for yellowing.

I agree with this 100%
ESP with the challenged, higher beltline modern cars, the chrome helps.
PLUS, if the sihouette shape of the window profile looks good, there's nothing wrong with accenting it with chrome. Black just makes it looks like any other car.

I can see BMW guys wanting black, bc the bmw chrome trim shape/thickness is nasty, as is the window profile--especially towards the C pillar.

The nice thing about the Lexus window bezels (Jeff's car) is that it looks 1 piece, and is smoothed out nicely. vs the bmw one, u can see all the breaks in the chrome for the door jams and such. Plus, it doesn't help that the chrome bezel on the top of the window is different in width from the sides of the window...and different once again for the bottom of the window. YUCK.

I didn't say I liked Chrome or I didn't like Chrome. For the grille I didn't like the shape so blacking it out makes it blend in more.

The lexus badge is still Chrome. Because I don't have super dark tint and the colour of the car I don't know if black window trim will be enough contrast. I like the coupe like window profile.

Agreed. It's also the front lip that Jeff added that makes the awkward front bumper look proper.

This is what a stock one looks like:

- RainX on the windows
- ghetto waxing with Turtle wax + cordless hand buffer of metal portions of the car; skipped the bumpers \:\|
- Touchup paint all over the fucking place ... \:\|

Re: Nice out today, anyone start their spring detail?

Just washed my car for the time this year.
Then couldn't pass up detailing the car after seeing all those rust dots on the paint.

When I started to apply the Klass All-in-one, I realized this stuff is like 10 years old and I wasn't sure if it's worth using it anymore.

So tried this Silverwax Fast Wax sample I got from the autoshow in Jan.
Just spray, wait a minute, then buff. Super easy, but learned that it only last s like a couple of months.

I looked into this stuff a little further. I think it's based on Quebec and can't really find reviews on them.

They also have this nano (ceramic?) stuff for about $60. Bargain compare to other leading brands'. They say it's good up to 3 cars.

Interesting video I watched today.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LQ-SGYb2sJE&t=669s

Turtle Wax Ice liquid wax lasted surprisingly long. ( wtf? Hard to find).
All the ceramics over lasted it but the cost difference is very high.

Maybe I'll try Silverwax sealant? Probably good for about a year.

titty sprinkles

Re: Nice out today, anyone start their spring detail?

^so that spray wax will last like...a month max. what those are ment to do is give the car that fresh waxed look (if it's been clayed, polished and sealed properly beforehand), you wash the car and spray that on it and it brings back that gloss. otherwise, it won't last a shit and barely add shine to a car without a good wax if it's not there.

that nano ceramic stuff seems like a gimmick to me. haven't used it so i can't comment on it but it can't be anything more spectacular than a sealant. it's not a coating, so i would call it smoke and mirrors. a $50 bottle of blackfire would probably be better and can do up to 40 cars.

Re: Nice out today, anyone start their spring detail?

Though the guy who tested in the video, all the ceramic coated lasted over a year unde the sun.
Everything else (wax, sealant) failed.

He also has another video going right now with 34? Different products on the hood.

I detail it once a year anyway. Too rich for me.
What do you use ?

Re: Nice out today, anyone start their spring detail?

personally i don't pay attention to youtube product vids, i like to try the product out for myself and then make a decision. i stick to the clay/polish/seal routine that will last about 6-8 months and may re-seal which doesn't take long about every two months because i'm extra like that. if i were looking for something more long term i would consider doing a coating and a specific quick spray wax that keeps the coating looking fresh.

All I keep reading about is ceramic coating and fancy shit that's new to me.

nope. a good clay bar, polish and wax will go a long, long way. basics: wash with meguries gold class (crappy tire $14), clay ($20 crappy if you want to go through claying, use wash soap), polish (meguires M205, amazon smallest size, use machine dual action polisher), seal w/whatever sealant you like, i like blackfire. tire shine clean rims and bling out.

I've got tons. Do the clay mitts do anything with those or am I better off using a bar? Does IronX help?

clay mitt or bar, it's the same thing. a bar is better for getting into the tight spaces tho so i always have both on hand.

IronX does help, quite a bit however, i don't use it. it's pretty much the same thing as sonax wheel cleaner; a cleaner based detergent that reacts with iron (the fallout), turns purple and dissolves it. personally i don't like it because what about the parts that don't have iron on it? it's strong enough that it doesn't leave clear coat alone so i'd rather be on the safe side and go at it with a clay bar and some elbow grease and save the clear coat. plus, it stinks. bad. so bad that i would consider wearing a respirator if using it.

Sonax for rims is the absolute BOMB ...

I used to just spray on, let it sit, then wash off, no drying, and a few days later I'd get this disgusting grey build-up of dirt... Finally grabbed a rag to rub it off, and those rims are damn shiny, and stay shiny...

Yeah but expensive. My wheels stay clean till I drive and I’ll it’s over. Brake dust is so bad that I can see brake dust streaks on the side of the car LOL

Re: Nice out today, anyone start their spring detail?

sonax is great and all but it's expensive, and not needed. before you slap your summer wheels on give them a nice inside and out clean with the sonax. then grab your sealant or any wax for that matter and slap a coat of wax on them, takes 10 mins.

then you'll be able to wipe brake dust right off, or at most some quick detailer or car wash soap while you're washing the car. it'll save the wheels from the clear coat peeling.
