97 Four door m3 with Automatic transmission (need the auto) with 95k miles on it. The guy is asking $8200 for it. Says all major services have been done at the dealership and has all receipts with Dinan Work. Has some late model 7 series (says 750) sport wheels with new tires etc. The options are as follows:

* 10k $$$ dinan work with all receipts..
* 18 inch chrome wheels
* 5k dollar sound system with dvd moniter and mb quartz 3000watt plus
* strut bars
* brand new smoked? clear lights in rear... clear side markers and clear front corner lights (yuck)
* tint all way around
* 3 gages in dash installed by dinan
* cold air intake
* full exhaust and header
* shift kit chip
* stage 4 computer chip
* Dinan throttle body w/ egr spacer
* air flow meter
* dinan badge

Factory options:

* has every option but front heated seats!!!!
*6cy inline 24 valve efi 3.2 liter automatic 5 sp. overdriveW/ sport manual or e modes for shifting (19 city/28hw)--not with dinan upgrades though!
* Dual zone a/c automatic. 80 amp alt. limited slip differential. ratio is 3.23. f&r discs. f&r defrosters. Dual airbags. fog lights. 16.4 gal fuel tank. ground effects. dual heated mirrors. traction control. full size spare tire with brand new tire.
* luxery pkg., sun roofW/tilt , 8 way dual power seats

He also mentioned that:

*All maintance up to date and tranny just seviced and checked with new gaskets and fluid changed

*painted the roof and rear of car to fix fading and scratches..

* Just installed all new struts and shocks and

*H and R lowering springs

* brand new rotors zimmerman (drilled) with brand new calipers and brake pads.

* new ipod alpine stereo

Any idea on what the power might be on this car? Also what type of issues to look for? The car has the magma brown leather recaro (8 way dual powered) seats. Body is pretty clean.

Most importantly...

Do I have any room for negotiation??

Any help is appreciated

thats a great deal for that car.

95k miles
no rust?
no accidents?
proper maintenance plus mods for $8200 and you want to get it for less?

thats a good find. even with the auto.

just make sure its had the cooling system done, rtabs, and rear shock mounts/suspension changed

just browse bimmer forums and m3 forums for sale section and see what the cars are going for.
in that condition with that mileage(Even auto) they typically fetch more than that.

heres a check list of items to watch for

Thanks for the info Euphoric. I figured its a good deal but worth a shot to see if I could save a few more bucks if there is anything that might require work on the car (timing belt/water pump, any other issues etc. )

Here are some pics for reference.

How are the auto trannys on these anyway? Can the transmission be 'shifted manually'? i.e. fun factor.

i have no clue on the auto shifting.

thats a clean car though.(seats are a bit more worn than id like but you could try to leatherique them/buy used seats which isnt pricey)
hes missing his fog lights.
could use some glass headlights too

I would do a PPI(pre purchase inspection) at a good bmw place that knows these cars. then you can go forward with pricing.
if the buyer refuses than walk away and find something else.

UGHHH.

The interior is awful, the wheels would be ok if they weren't chrome I guess. The clear corners with CLEARLY BLUE bulbs in them are awful, and I bet the taillights are JUST as bad.

I don't like it much. The mods look tasteless, and that interior is beat to shit. Those aren't Recaros either, btw. Suspension is about all it's got going for it.

If it HAS to be an auto, I'd look for one that is pristine, unmodded, with receipts. Shouldn't be hard to find in that price range.

What kind of seats are those? I really want the Vader seats if I can find them in that interior color.

The clear corners/headlights will be changed which I do agree make the car look tasteless. . Rims don't bother me too much since they have brand new tires but they will also eventually be changed out. Tail lights are stock except the yellow part is 'smoked'.

Most of the engine mods are Dinan, and he says that he has receipts for all of them, which is a big reason I got interested in the car in the first place. I will definitely be looking at those before making the decision.

When does the timing chain*sprockets / water pump / tensioners need to get serviced? How much can one get them done for typically?

Also do you guys have any experience with Auto e36 m3's? This one has the shift kit chip which raises the shift points in both auto/sport mode as well as the shifting speed.

How does the sport mode on these work?

The paint's really clean,other than the seat,I cant really see anything wrong with it. Do some research,but I thought the auto trans in these were GM,and were reliable.

Euphoric's been looking into this,his info will probably be among the most up to date. PM him a bunch. \:\)

vaders come in the coupes only.
unless someone swapped them into the sedan after.

though many argue the sport seats(which are standard in sedans..and the car you are looking at ) are more comfortable than the vaders and id partially agree with that.

water pump better have been done by now or its a ticking time bomb.

automatic resale value is pretty much horrible, and the lux package and seats are KO'd

I'd pass you can get exactly what you want for same money.

seems like an ok price, its hard to value the automatics. I guess they need the dinan upgrades to offset what they lost with those heavy as wheels and stereo. I have seen 97-98 auto sedans site for sale around here for months in the $5 to $6k range. If you need an auto buy a 328i and save $5k.

Other than normal 100k maintainence like cooling system, suspension, etc. mine has given me no problems.

Don't really want an automatic, but due to other needs, I need to get a car with an auto tranny for the next couple of years at least. The regular 3 series won't have any power and I don't think I can sacrifice THAT much.

How much did the cooling system work cost ya? What was all involved?

The waterpump has not been done on the car by the current owner. What is the expected cost on that?

I need to go and look at the car still. What do you think I should offer this guy?

So I drove the car over the weekend and was pretty happy with things.

Being an auto, this thing isn't very impressive off the line. But in sport mode, the transmission shifts really high up in the RPM range obviously because of the chip, but the really interesting thing is how it downshifts as you're slowing down.

The interior is old. There are cracks in the seat. Along with many other little things that are wrong with the car since it is obviously 13 years old, I didn't see anything major that seemed like it needed attention. It definitely needs some TLC, but the way it has been kept, doesn't seem like it needs a whole lot.

I will definitely have to do the waterpump, and probably the other related maintainence once I get the car.

Headlights are definitely going to get changed. I'm thinking the depo headlights with the 6000k HID kit that they sell as a package. The inner ricer in me wants to get them with angel eyes, but the grown up in me is saying no. Hell they look good...

The car drives and feels much like my 2000 civic Si in terms of the go-cart-isque feeling. However that is where it ends, as the power is A LOT more compared to what I've been used to with my car. The automatic is doable though. I haven't driven any other m3 before, let alone an automatic one. But after driving this thing, the shifts were quick and the car was responsive. There is an obvious lag off the line, but when it gets moving, it's pretty damn nice.

I'm just waiting on a few things to clear with the seller, then hopefully I'll be a brand new owner of a not so brand new e36 m3. \:D

Sounds like the Allison in my oldmans Duramax.. Maybe the M3 tranny has a 'tow' mode?

-Don't get angel eyes. They're ricey, problematic, and hardly ever work correctly. Huge waste of money.

-Look into a 3.91 differential... they're relatively cheap, wake up the car a ton with the auto, and you can then sell your 3.38 a good chunk of change to somebody with a manual tranny.

-Get either new ZKW fog lights or fog light deletes.... don't just leave it how it is.

-Congrats!! You'll love it

Refresh the shifter with all new bushings and you'll have nothing to complain about. I mean replace EVERYTHING in there and it's truly a night and day difference. Z3 rack will also make your steering shorter than you'd ever want it, and both are relatively cheap mods.

as I said on the m3 forum...i drove two cars with all refreshed shifter set ups. and a bunch with worn crap.

my car is just a touch worse than the all refreshed set ups...meaning its pretty much on par with how good it can be. and its...ok. just booting around town its fine(though super long rows) its when you start to open it up and want to rip the shifter off kind of shifts it just gets hung up on itself and doesnt feel that great.

no car is perfect so its not like id ditch the car because of it...and i will likely get an ssk and freshin it up anyways. I already picked up the uuc double shear selector rod(was fs locally for cheap) though my side to side play is really really good(not worn) )

the steering seems worse than the Si was and that thing turned like a bus lol 3 pt everywhere.

though i do need new tie rods(getting done this week) so that will at least improve taht aspect(a little). but hopping between the STi and the m3 you really can feel it.

(even with shifting etc) the sti is like a ninja compared to the M3.

i still like the car, dont get me wrong.

I am not trying to be a dick, but I just don't get the point. Why get at an auto e36 M3 which defeats part of the charm of the M3? There are plenty of decent performing and comfy sedans with an automatic transmission that will probably be cheaper and less costly to maintain.

For my criteria, it fit the bill. I needed an automatic 4 door car but did not want to sacrifice the driving experience. I do agree with the fact that the auto tranny takes away from the allure of the M3, but I sure as hell didn't want to drive any old blah sedan like an accord or a camry. This car is a daily driver and at this juncture in my life I need something that is practical that everyone in the family can drive if the need be.

The auto tranny isn't bad at all. With the Dinan chip, it shifts quick and late and also does give me the option to tool around in manual mode. It's definitely not as fun and quick as its manual counterpart, but I don't mind the loss in power.

After all, I've had my em1 Si for the last 10 years (bought brand new in 2000), and the power difference for me is quite substantial. I will probably get something manual (like a roadster) in a couple of years, might get a bike in the meanwhile once I sell the Si. But for now, my compromise is the automatic transmission and 4-doors. I just didn't want to give up on the driving experience.

I really would like to do this. Also maybe change the steering wheel. Kinda ugly lookin'.

BTW the seller included the fog lights. They're just not working right now. Lots of little things to do with the car.

I'll post pics soon....

So I went ahead with the purchase. The deal went okay, now I'm just waiting to get her registered once the title has been mailed to me by the bank that previously held the lean.

The car is a lot of fun to drive. I think this will make a nice transitional vehicle till I get something a bit more exciting. Looks a bit grown up compared to the Si, so I can daily drive this w/o having to take out the family hyundai Sonata and still do the occasional spirited driving when I want to.

Car came with the following mods: (receipts came with the car)

Dinan Stage 4 chip
Dinan transmission chip
Dinan high flow throttle body
Dinan Cold Air Intake
Dinan exhaust

H&R Springs

Alpine stereo w/ ipod controller/wire + amps/sub

Things that I've noticed:

1) Shocks/struts need to be changed. The car is on H & R springs but is dumped from the back. The front is pretty low too. However there is this rattling noise coming from the front left and right when I drive over little bumps. Any recommendations?

2) Car also needs some camber kits, especially on the back. I also want to get some light 18" or even 17" wheels for better ride/comfort. The car is currently on some 7 series wheels.

3) On cruising speeds, the car is giving decent gas mileage at around 25mpg with mostly freeway driving. The minute you mash on the gas, the mileage turns to shit!

4) The car definitely needs the waterpump replaced, and I might even get the entire cooling system refreshed.

5) The seats are in bad shape. Should I get these repaired or buy new ones? The interior needs a bit of TLC.

6) I want to do all the maintenance on it. Car has almost 99k on it, and I'm sure it could use fresh iginition/fuel stuff. New spark plugs/wires/ fuel filter/ fuel pump / cleaning injectors time? *Thinking about using Sea Foam)
