Wanted to try out my newest lens...Minolta 50/3.5 Macro. Goes to 1:1...most of the shots at 1:1 was un-usable b/c it was so friggin hard to maintain focus. So I ended up turning to my favorite lens, Minolta 50/1.4.

nice pics.. something is weird about some of them... the bokeh maybe? like this one looks like it falls off into a photoshop filter of "colored pencil" or "watercolor" or something. but i know nothing about the lenses you use, so that could be normal.

yeah on some of them, i used the editing tool in iPhoto to bring out the colors/sharpness a little b/c they looked a little dull. Maybe I went overboard on some of them?

They're a bit underexposed and the processing just magnifies that fact. Try a few different exposures next time and see which one comes out best. I often try to overexpose a bit.

thanks for the link. getting the right exposure is my biggest struggle right now. I started looking at histograms to try to avoid wash outs on either end of the spectrum...but a lot of times, it seems unavoidable.
is it better to over-expose vs under if you had to choose one over the other?
and thx for the link. will definitely read up on it.

It comes down to preference, but you have to have experience to know what you prefer. If you prefer darker looks you can still overexpose in-camera and darken in post with good results. You can't get anywhere near the same results the other way which is why dynamic range is so important. You want to capture all the detail you can, and do the rest in post. Processing can't add detail nearly as well as it can take it away.

If nothing else, learn how to use the bracketing function in your camera. You'll get a handful of shots to compare and play around with... and maybe do some HDR if you want.

Try thrift stores like salvation army. In the last couple weeks, I picked up the following:
Minolta 135/3.5
Vivitar 135/2.8
Vivitar 75-205/3.8 Macro zoom
spent around $40 total.

My other legacy lenses I've picked up (all via ebay), all Minolta rokkors
2 50/1.4s...one in MC and another in MD
50/1.7
50/3.5 macro
28/2.8
200/4
35-70/3.5 macro zoom

I also picked up via CL a voigtlander ultron 35/1.7

It's almost becoming an obsession! But it's fun playing with lenses decades old and seeing them produce awesome pics.

Thanks I don't know why I didn't think of the salvation army. I just got a nex6 and sold the nex5n and evf to my ex so I won't let myself spend more money on camera stuff but I think I can talk my self into some salvation army glass \:\)
