So Saturday I put gas in the Mini and then the next day as I'm putting gas in the Suzuki I realize that I don't remember putting in premium. So when I get home I look at the receipt and low and behold I put 87 in the Mini. I basically filled it and then drove home, max 15kms. Haven't touched it since (not because of the gas but because its always like that). Anyway, this is the first time I've done this. I guess I could just buy a bottle of octane booster and be done with it? The shitty part is this gas will likely be in the car for a while as I don't really drive it all that much. And even if I decided to drive it to work everyday that would still take a while because I'm 4kms from work (both ways!)

LOL 1 bottle of octane boost barely does anything. Don't worry - these things all have knock sensors. Dont drive it hard, don't put it in a high load situation (ie: starting in 2nd gear or moderate accelerations)...and run the tank low until you can pop proper fuel in there.
The car will automatically pull a ton of timing and drive like poo. This is the ECU saving the engine - you should expect this.

yeah this.
having done this in the past with past vehicles i've usually just gone to get 91 or 94 say at half a tank. then run that shit out to super empty, then fill up with 91 totally.
wth 4km both ways? and i thought my drive was short. dude buy a bike! LOL

Exactly, 87 and 91 doesn't matter under light load (less than 50%) even on regular it won't pull timing as long as you aren't pushing it, the car will act the same. Even running 91, under load (90%+) the car will still most likely pull timing so you will be fine either way.

Ive run 87 in the SiR one time in the winter, I wasn't pushing it so I didn't notice any change in power really. I did notice that it got like 15% worse fuel mileage than I would normally get in the winter. Even ran 87 for short bits in the summer. Life goes on this is really a non-issue. If you want avoid driving it on really hot days until you can use the gas up and get more gas in there, and when it's at half full, just top it off with 94 which will put you at right around 90-91 octane which is the requirement.
A lot of dealerships don't put premium in cars that require it because there is no way of you knowing without sending the gas out for analysis.
I agree that the 4 km commute to work is a bigger issue to the health of the engine in the long run....

if you really want to, you could just siphon it out?
I might actually do just this.....as I'll need the gas for the Suzuki anyway. Funny thing is, the tank in the Mini will fill the Suzuki probs twice, or at the very least 1.5x.
Not a fan of sucking on pipes tho.....[/nohomo]

...you do not need to actually suck on the fuel to siphon fluid out of the tank. look at how to siphon. It requires zero sucking :p
Also...WTF

I have self respect. There are some things you will never see me do, like...siphoning out 87 octane from a mini cooper to fill up a suzuki samurai, being the perfect example.

looks like the gas tank will need to be replaced as well. The 87 molecules are deeply embedded in the tank walls and will always fuck up the 91. Almost as bad as putting diesel in your car. I've heard about this before. He's right. You might need to replace the fuel lines too. I'd run the updated straight lines. It will help the electrons in the gas flow smoother for more hp. It's an often overlooked yet easy hp mod.

guys don't be mean. the easy fix is adding 5w30 oil in the tank. it's a known octane booster.

Might as well change the transmission fluid as well.
Don't worry, just dont push it.

Since you are working on the car, its a good time to change both the high beam and low beam the headlight fluid and rebuild the muffler bearings.
