Haven't flown to the US in years, and have never done it for a work event so is there anything out of the norm that I need to know for US customs going in through Terminal 1?

Flight is too damn early in the am and I won't be getting any sleep beforehand so I want to make the process as smooth as possible. Leaving on Monday morning so I imagine the terminal will be pretty busy.

I tell them I'm going for sales meetings all the time. If I have tools with me I have the invoice available to show them something was purchased from me and I'm going to support it.

Nothing. I fly to the US all the time and there's nothing you really need to be prepared for. Come up with a short statement for customs explaining why you're there. Anything good to keep you from having to talk to much \:D Just makes the process easier. Other than that you're set!

Know the address of the hotel you will be at. Have the onsite customer/alternate corporate office address on hand just incase and that's about it.

make sure you tell them that you're not any work in the states or else you'll need a work permit. you're just going there for a meeting or conference

i was writing it off my phone. anyways, yeah, be careful of how you word what you're doing in the states for work.

if there is any hint of you doing work that should/could be done by Americans, or working on American material, they will give you a hard time.

e.g. if you're doing accounting on American accounts, they'll need the company your visiting to provide information on why you're doing this work and stuff and how it's authorized via company contract etc.

then again, it'll depend on how anal your Customs officer is.

There is no point. My buddy has worked in the states for 5+ years now and crosses back and forth every single day. He refuses to get a nexus card, claims it's absolutely useless. Some people use a nexus card as a status symbol.

"yo bro, i got nexus, do you even know who I am?"

It'll probably save you a few minutes at the airport, that's about it.

gah. cost me $60USD for 5 years. gives me more time to be in the lounge i guess.

oh yeah, flying out on a Monday morning isn't bad. should take around 1 hour to get through customs and security IF you only have carry on. the new scanning machines before customs is pretty fast. hammer that out quicker than the other people fumbling through the instructions.

if they're doing that waiting room thing at the end of the terminal, then good luck. i flew once and they would only let you go to customs if your boarding time was at a specific time. if your time was later than the one on the TV screen in the waiting room, you'd have to wait there till your boarding time was called.

It saves you a whole lot more. I almost missed my flight to RTP once when the line up to clear immigration was over an hour long at Pearson. Dedicated immigration and security lines means it save you a lot of time. Same thing for driving, you are allowed to use the truck lane back into Canada at Queenston/Lewiston and other crossings.

Coming back into the Canada through pearson, saves you a lot of time (I never have checked baggage, just my carryon when I travel for work).

oh god. that bottle-necking lounge at the end of the terminal is THE WORST

it's not exactly clear what it's for, when i started my trip, i flew from YYZ to SFO. Got there at a decent time, by the time I was done checking in, I could've gone through, but i was directed to walk all the way to the end only to double back to the entrance gate. it was stupid as fuck.

that's exactly what happened to me. i was flying to EWR (newark) and i walked all the way to the end, only to be told to walk all the way back when i got there. i had great pity on all the elderly who were struggling walking all that distance and back while carrying their luggage.

it's either to massively slow you down or piss you off. at that moment, i told myself to finally get a nexus so i could bypass this annoyance.

Remember to sign up your kids - they can get Nexus for free if the parents have it. Makes cross border shopping with the family easier as everyone in the car needs a Nexus card.

Bit the bullet and finally signed up for Nexus. Last weekend's trip to Vegas was the last straw. Security and Customs lines for scum class are too damn long now.

Nexus = upper class.

if you like to eat til you shit your pants, definitely hit up the buffets. i believe the one at Ceasar (Bacchanal) is the ONE to go to.

if you like "fusion" asian food, go to Hakkasan. Get the duck salad.

The french bistro at the cosmo is "cute" and would be an inexpensive date restaurant, i think it's called comme ca. The steak tartare was pretty on point.

not sure if it's still there, at the Crystal, there's a sushi restaurant, they do a lunch prix fixe that's a pretty good deal.

if you want to ball the fuck out, Joel Robouchon. e by jose is another one worth checking out.

and go see britney. obviously.
